A very good friend of mine asked me if I have any photos which can be put into a calendar for next year. Does anyone know what is the market rate or how much I should charge for each photo that's printed? I only shoot on negs and slides. Should I provide enlarged prints, or have them scanned into a CD?

Hi buzzybee,
As far as I know for a stock agency called picture library which is based in Malaysia, they sell RM 600.00 per image to their clients but the amount is split into two - half to the photographer and half to the agency. So if you manage to sell it yourself you can pocket it all which is RM 600.00 per image. I think thts reasonable if the image is interesting and adequately sharp. Overseas is more expensive, picturestock.com sell USD 300.00 per image and split it into two between photographer and agency.

But it's all up to you in the end. Good luck :-)

my advice is...

If this is your first time, then charge RM200 (or less) per pix, but insist to have your name and email on every image you send. This can help generate $$$ and promote in future.

Actually, I don't really mind giving away images for a small token, if they are willing to promote me or (PhotoMalaysia.com)

"stock image" implies a license that does not include any details of the photographer. Think: "photo clip art".

KK, if you do that, you're gonna spoil the market for the rest of us... <_<

I presume you all are talking about selling the photo, right? Does this mean that once sold, I do not have the rights to the photo anymore (i.e. - to print, sell, use the photos in future)? Even though my name is printed with the photo?

What about renting? Is there a standard clause/contract to the limitation of prints or years of usage? I think I read somewhere in some overseas photo magazine or contest that the photos you submit to them, if they choose to use them, they have the rights to them for up to 2 years or something like that.

selling your prints or painting doesnt deprive you of your right to the image. It is universally stated and understood but I am not sure about which Act or which clause to invoke. There are 2 types of transaction to sell your image. One, it is called right-protected which means when you sell one picture to someone it will always remain one. The buyer cannot copy or duplicate the prints in whatever form, digital or otherwise. And of course you are the right owner, you just sell them one copy.

Another type of selling is called right-free or royalty-free which means while you are still the copyright owner of the picture, you sell the picture and you allow them to be duplicated and copied how many they want it to be. This normally happens when you sell small resolution file at a cheap price. Those images can be duplicated but in a small size because the one that you sell is already in a small size and small resolution.

I hope if somebody here knows more about legal matter, please enlighten us more... thanks

ok, thanks for your feedback, everyone. Looks like there's no standard price tag to renting/selling photos...
I'll just go with the flo... :)
