View Full Version : Color scheme for PM

Since I'm doing this from scratch again and considering that those who signed up immediately are more-than-likely the core users of this place:

What is a good overall background color scheme for PhotoMalaysia? It has to be easy to read (like black on white) but must also compliment and not overpower (in terms of brightness) posted photographs (meaning, not black on white). It must also look somewhat organized and clean...so no pinks (sorry Ted  ), purples, etc...

Suggestions?

from my point of view....the colour scheme now is nice....very smooth and subtle....but graphic-wise the preivousPM is better....

This colour is ok to me ..... Except put a little bit of graphic .. look like too plain... my thinking only..

This is just the default phpBB install. Right now I'm working on "wrapper" templates for all the site components, including the forums...complete with header/footer graphics

I like this colour scheme too... not too contrasty... softer on the eyes :) just need a dash of colour and design here and there to jazz it up a bit! I dunno, the Critique Corner in the previous PM website was a tad too dark for me :P

the default phpBB color scheme is ok, however i would prefer something like the Mac Aqua theme which is in my personal opinion very soothing to the eyes and not very intrusive like XP

I presume you are now working on the main portal and later intergrating phpbb into it. It would be nice if these components share the same theme.

...anyway i am very appreciative with what u r doing now and would be very thankful with whatever colour scheme u dished us at the end.

good luck.

actually i kinda like the last PM version colours. it sets PM apart from other photography sites. just my thought.

Brian, hope the features in the last PM will be brought back! hehe. like fast reply, assistant, critique corner, and our theme page! LOL. cheers.

agree with yoong, the last version of PM's colour scheme is just right and most importantly it sets apart PM from other photographic forums. The current colour scheme now is the default colour of php right? That's too normal imo. 8)

no good to use the default colour scheme, reason is MANY will be using the default colour thus it is hard to differentiate us from others. So...I suggest:
1. Black background with light (grey/white) wordings.
2. White background with black wordings.
3. Combination of orange / purple / violet colours for the design.

I would prefer darker background, it will give posted colour photos/pictures to be more outstanding, and BW photos also looks good with darker background.

so no pinks

it's quite typical for photo sites to have dark background, isn't it?

i'm probably a minority here, but i would prefer everything to look as simple and clean as possible. no unnecessary graphics. not even emoticons, avatars and sigs on the forum, just text text text, haha.

i'm sure anything you come up with would be good though.

need any help?

I like the previous color also. This default actually has been adopted by quite a few forum which use the same engine. I think we should have unique color or different than some others.

i would prefer two user-selectable schemes - one light (like this) and one dark.

Some people don't like light (hurts the eyes) and some don't like dark (too... err... dark! ), so giving a choice will cater for the crowd better.

A sample with light background is http://www.fotopages.com, it is clean, typical tabs for different subcats(Amazon like) and enhanced with colourful, cartoon like and interesting Logos/icons, something similar to the phpbb logo. What do you all think?

My take is a darker background.. the old colour scheme was actually very good.. raising the standards of PM..

the old colour scheme made PM more classy.. though I think it did slow things down a little..

Maybe for the forum (which has this functionality built-in), but impossible for the whole of the site, so one "standard" look in everything should be the first priority.

unless we use one of those Nuke thingies as the engine...

unless we use one of those Nuke thingies as the engine...

What's a polite way to say "hell no"?

Our first 2 years we were on PostNuke. WAY too many "little issues" and way too much of a user cms. Great if you're not running a high volume site and have a lot of time on your hands. Anyway, they're changing both the theming system and API for version .8, which has been "in the works and almost ready" for almost a year now  . Most of the other *Nuke CMS's fall along the same lines...meant to be "the best" but coded by hobbiests that enter and leave at-will...meaning 90% of the stuff you impliment you had better learn ground-up 'cause chances are the developer(s) is gonna disappear or decide to change portal systems.

PHPNuke? Even worse...only one developer controls everything and he has a major God complex.

The best opensource CMSes I've come across so far are type3, which would take too long to impliment here, and MamboOS, which isn't suited for this kind of community.

well i must agree with u on most of the points regarding the demerit of these cms.

we have the ability to do better, therefore we should.

keep up the good work

The previous format is very good. Maybe some minor improvements to allow for W/NW threads....just a thought

The prev color was ok, but at some places, like critique corner, the light/dark alternation made the fonts difficult to see.
