Here's what it says:

Beginning Sunday 15 August 2004, at 9:00am, the National Art Gallery of Malaysia and agencies under the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage Malaysia together with Kuala Lumpur City Hall, various artists' associations, painters, designers, craftsmen and art students will join forces in organising LAMAN SENI KUALA LUMPUR (or Kuala Lumpur Arts Market).

LAMAN SENI KUALA LUMPUR in its casual and fun open-air market setting will offer a colourful and varied array of unique artworks and handmade crafts from more than 100 stalls.

LAMAN SENI KUALA LUMPUR will take place in the leafy surroundings of the National Art Gallery, in "Laman Puri" (area between between the National Art Gallery and the National Theatre), and in the spacious car park between the National Art Gallery and the Titiwangsa Secondary School.

Individual tents/booths measuring 10 feet x 10 feet inclusive of tables, chairs and fan will be provided. Space rental is just RM30.00 per stall per participation. In conjunction with the official launch, the rental fee will be waived for participants on the 15 August launch of LAMAN SENI KUALA LUMPUR.

Ted, Eugene and I been wanting to open a stall selling/exhibiting our photos, initially at the Kiara Sunday market but to date the place has been booked up. So this would be a good chance for us to test the market. I'm inviting anyone else who might be interested to join forces. We can discuss further on what pics to sell/exhibit.

Watch this space...

Cheers!

Ok, I've spoken to the lady in charge. There's space left so no worries. She'll contact me when the application due date is passed and tell me what to do next. There will be a visit to the site before the launch day so that we can choose our stall location and familiarise ourselves with the site. The Permaisuri is officiating the launch on the 15th (Sun rite?) August.

As for prints to sell, don't go below 8"x12". You'll need to get some cannisters to package the prints when/if the buyer buys. Ask Eugene for more info. I need to get some too. Maybe a bulk buy? How about it Eugene?

Try to select the best prints you can get. Also do cater for the mass market, i.e. don't put pictures of your dog, kids or parents but instead, consider macro shots of flowers, animals, or landscape shots as well.

Don't undersell your prints either. I'm planning to sell at RM100 and above depending on pic and size. I may sell a few for RM200 onwards too. Depends lah how. Also we need to price tag the prints. Can someone get stickers?

More to follow later...

Had a chat with Ted just now regarding this matter. Here's a few suggestion (by me) on how to go about this.

i. Only bring what you think can sell. Remember, visitors are either VERY keen in art or know nuts about art. Think about that and try to blow up prints that can cater to both categories. We are not trying to sell stock image, so advoid it.

ii. Minimum blow up size is 8"x12" but Ted suggested at least 11R to be impressive. 16 R would be the best!

iii. I would suggest not framing up your prints. Only place it in a plastic and place cupboard behind it. You wouldn't know what the client wants. Who know, you may just lose a client because he/she don't like the way you framed the photo.

iv. I suggest we fixed a price range. Are you all familiar with the "limited print" protocol of photos?

v. Who is interested? Do place your name down. I'll start..

I am also interested. The sale carnival starts at 15 Aug 2004 and onwards.

The concept is The National Art Gallery wants the artists themselves sell their art material direct to the public. It is such a magnificent idea actually.

Matt may I ask you one question plz. How do you print those photos? I mean do you print it at the mini lab which uses fuji crystal archive paper (which is reputed to last longer than other paper) do you use inkjet print or offset printing which is the best but must be printed in bulk or at least more than 50 pcs.
So which method do you choose to print your photos?

If you're printing 8 x 12 and below, stick to local minilab. If you're gonna print much bigger than that, then I go to a place in Setiawangsa, introduced by Ted. They have an Epson inkject printer with archival inks and some cool paper.

Let me know if you're interested. I'm planning to go there closer to the art market launch date.

Thanks matt. I will see first. I have got a couple of my slides printed at 8 x 12 at the minilab in Kelana jaya, the one that I always frequent. So far their output are good. I will check thru my slides again if there are any that need can be blown up to bigger size.

It is Syt Sri Kelana at SS 5, same row as syed. I mostly deal with Shafiq (A muslim convert chinese and a nephew of the owner whom I call them uncle and auntie only).

For slide print the price is RM 12.00 for 8 x 12. For negative is I think it is at RM 10.00. (8x12)

I do my prints at chow yang...8x12 charge rm 8 for digital and negs...rm 10 for slides...they do a pretty good job..if printing b/w, ask for matt print and they can even print out a decent b/w for you..

So who are participating?....Good to see members here taking the initiative to display their works and if it sells it is a bonus.

Hi, Ted why don't you organise an outing to the Arts and craft market on that day....at least some members can learn from the other photographers selling their prints and also gauge what the market wants.

The market for photo prints in m'sia is in its infancy stage....so is the arts.

Hi all,

I just got an email response from the organiser, who said that those that have applied for the stalls would be getting them. However, there were no other details about the event as yet, and the organiser mentioned that she will contact me in the near future. So I suppose this is as good as it gets for now.

Since there are many of us (6 so far), I would like to suggest that we split up the rota. Of course, all of you are welcome to the stall but I think we can have 2 persons manning the stalls at any one time, so that none of us have to stay there the whole day. Having said that, I'd probably stay longer to make sure everything's ok.

As for the prints, I suggest you start selecting now and print this weekend, if possible. Ted, I don't know if the print shop in Setiawangsa is open on Sundays - can you get back to me on this? If so, I plan to go there this Sunday and anyone is welcomed to join me. Otherwise, it'll have to be tom (Sat.) then.

Also think about storage, presentation and packinging (in case there's a buyer!). I'm bringing my folio bag, and the A4 size folder for showcase only. I think I only have about 10 images so far, I'll be printing a few more. One suggestion is to have a smaller size option (8R and below), but sold together as a series (like a trio for example). This would give more choices to the prospective buyers, and would give us the ability to access the market's preferences. Mine would be 10R above, so someone else can do 6R or 8R even. Mounted and framed is also an option to consider.

Let's have a chat over coffee over the weekend. Anybody wanna suggest the time and place?

Err Eugene, I think 11R would do for now.... I've changed my mind about printing that big. Also, do you know where to find envelopes which have cardboard back in it, for packing 8x12 prints? I plan to use these for smaller prints. No need for cannister. Pls get back to me via SMS. Thanks!

Hi, maxby is only doing a peggy back with eugene. So there is one more place for another member.

Print size will be 11x14....don't know what is the display format? Whether they would provide display boards, tables, etc.......

eugene

I have choosen about 5 prints to enlarge. 3b/w and 2 grace series photo. Looking through my whole portfolio again, I realize that I don't have much that I can enlarge that is sellable. Guess that when it comes to exhibition, I naturally increased my own standard. So hight till I feel so depress that I don't have much good stuff.

Matt, I am thinking of enlarging to 8x12 for colour; 11x14 for b/w.

As for canister and envelope, will look around for it. Give me some time. Heading over to subang later, will page you when I find it.

maxby

If you use an envelope, you will need a cardboard to be inserted with the print....any paper box material will do... :D

eugene

Here's what I got,

i. cardboard canister RM3/piece, can store up to 12R

ii. brown envelope (9"x12"), RM7/25piece, good for 8R prints

iii. cardboard, RM0.20/piece(appr 8"x12"), price negotiatable in bulk

Who wants it? Please place order here so that I can get the proper amount. Min amount for cardboard and envelope is 25piece. ASAP. Latest by Monday night. Closing orders on Monday midnight.

so far..
i. Matt: 10canister, 25 envelope/cardboard.

Ok, those of you who are participating, can we meet up sometime this week to discuss? How about Thursday after work? Mid Valley's Strudels (PM's unofficial meeting point) is my suggestion.

I've printed some prints 11 x 16 and even mounted some of them, so that I could hang them if there's space. I would like to suggest that you get those price sticker labels, and stick them on the plastic wrapping that should be used for your prints.

Arrrgh! I am so pissed off I could break her neck!

I've just gotten an email response from one of the organisers. This is the result of two weeks of following up via email and phone:

"I have just checked with Mdm Kamariah Abdullah, who handles the stall
rentals (03.40254990 ext 161), unfortunately she has no knowledge nor
registration form of your booking. Are you able to advise when and to
where you sent the form?
Regrettably, at this time all the stalls have been taken up and the next
best option if I may if perhaps if you joined the next market, which falls
on Saturday, 4 Sep 2004. For your info, stalls in that one is also fast
running out.
I'm truly sorry if you are disappointed. All the same do come by this
Sunday to have a look-see and to get a better feel of the market.
We welcome your visit.

With best wishes,
Tiwei"

I can't believe what I've just read. I have even called to ask them if they've received my application. They told me all is fine and there are plenty of spaces left.... B*TCHES!!!!

F**K their management, bl**dy incompetent monkeys!

Rest assured, I have not given up....

Watch this space!

Dudes, latest update...

I went over to NAG at noon, met the organiser (who happens to be a young woman...ehem...) and finally managed to sort the whole thing out. A caveat: there is a small possibility that we won't get the stall, but if that's the case, we would be given space for a car boot-style sale. Also, the only thing they will provide for the stall are table and chair (1 of each). So we need to figure out the display format in the upcoming meet in MV.

One more important thing. Tomorrow there will be a briefing at 3pm, Auditorium NAG for all the participants. This is where they will allocate the space/location for our stall. Obviously I need to be there, but at 3pm I don't know if I can make it. So I need backups and volunteers for this briefing. So, names pls....

Ok, the sunday market is on....

Here's what you need to do, to be divided amongst yourselves....

1. Additional tables/chairs - if you want to display your prints, you'll have to bring additional tables as space is limited. If not, please don't blame anyone later if you can't find space to do so. You've been warned.

2. Table cloth - a good idea to bring nice ones, as there'll be prizes for the best looking stall.

3. Clothes lines/fishing line, S-hook - this is an alternative to displaying your MOUNTED prints on the table. We will fix two lines, top for hooking to the frame, bottom for support. Can somebody bring these?

4. Price labels - IMPORTANT. All products to be sold must have price labels.

5. Cannisters, envelopes, plastic bags - if you wanna sell your prints, think about packaging it properly.

6. Receipts? Might be a good idea to have a book of receipts ready. It looks more professional.

7. Others - scissors, knife, cellotapes, pen, biz card, etc....

Remember the road entrance to the NAG will be closed at 7am so if you wanna park inside you'll have to come early.

Our stall is no. 15b, almost at the end of the stalls, right in front of the NAG

Ok, now I need your contact numbers.
