Just wondering, do you guys leave your equipment in the car? So many car break in nowadays. My kolig lost his company notebook recently.

Yesterday, went minum with friends, have to leave my camera in the luggage compartment. The whole night cannot sit still, afraid someone will break into my car.

Heard from a friend that those bad guys also have high tech stuffs. Equipment to scan notebooks, electronic equip in the car :o :o. Possible?

Would you leave your camera in the car, even for a short drink at the mamak?

Anthony.

Random chance...there isn't any greater chance that someone else will break into your car because you put your camera in the glovebox...unless they know it's in there.

I'd be more afraid of heat damage...or long-term vibration damage.

Sometimes situation like, you brought your camera to work and then later have to go disco for friend's birthday. How ?

Bring it inside disco? Hopefully you get past the bouncers.
Drive back home no matter how far your house to put your camera.

I think the best option would be, put a dog inside your car ... or a python ...

never never leave ur equipment in the car....
Seriously..

if u hav to...
park ur car at a place where it's visible..that u hav a clear view of ur car...
else, bring ur equipment along..put it in a bag/ nice shopping bags or something..

same thing here..there were a few times where i had to leave the camera in the car...
so 1 stop or 2 stops b4 the final destination..i try to camouflarge it b4 i put in the car..can be bott..bla bla
of coz..make sure no one sees u doing that...that's why do it b4 the final stop where u going to park ur car..even then..can't stop worrying all nite during the yum char session..hahaha

Put it in the trunk (err...sorry, "boot" :P ) in a plain bag. Most smash the window and grab from the cab, not the trunk. :dunno:

I don't know if they have this high-tech or not.

One thing for sure is they can open your car door/rear bonet in less than one minute without trigger the car alarm. I personally saw this kind of demo.

if it is a cheap P&S, then I don't worry much. If it is my Nikon, then no matter how heavy it is...I will still bring around. I don't wanna feel sorry or regret L A T E R ! ! !

Now I have a notebook, more than 4kg is a bag. Heavy...but I will always bring it around and will not leave it inside my car for even a second without me. Can't afford that kind of risk...

heard one proverb: If your stuff get stolen, blame yourself and not the theive for your own careless and tempting the theive.

Yeap I have seen this kind of demo. He tried it on my car (wira)...
I timed him, in 2 minutes he can open the door without triggering the alarm and start the car's engine. :o :o

So I guess I will be carrying the camera around .. even meeting up with my clients. Its kinda strange, I am in IT line, and what with that software engineer carrying that camera around for?

yeah enzo...

i saw the demo too..back when I was in Ipoh..
he did it with my wira too..all it took was a long plastic ruler..
no alarm..doors opened..

unless ur car is installed with the metal plats..a few small ones around the potential jacking points..car doors...bonett...trunk...etc etc..cost rm190-200+ if i m not mistaken..
only then it will be A BIT safe..

but no matter wat alarm u put..di sana ada kemahuan, disitu ada jalan.

well enzo, if u find that strange, I should feel even stranger.
Last weekend, went around KL shooting. Then had to go to this hotel for buffet dinner to celebrate my dad's b'day. Of course I didn't want to leave my camera and vest with all my lenses, filters and stuff behind, so my parents looked at me one kind... why bring all this photo equipment to eat buffet hah? Me girl some more, wearing vest...look like clown only :o  :eh?: :P

I used to carry my camera bag especially on saturday (work half day) and my boss will ask me why I always carry that bag on saturday.

Only very rarely do I leave my camera in the car and even so, it is in the boot and out of sight.

On stolen notebooks, it is always some people already know you had one when you got into the car & they simply follow you to wherever you park the car. Same with expensive looking photography gear and other stuff. Just exercise some care where you park your car and if you had just finished a photo event with all those EXPENSIVE gear in full public display, just be mindful that you are at some risk and take some precautions.

How much is the insurance premium for the stuff - some reinsurer quoted me 5% of the insured sum for photography gear !

Not true (modern myth). Modern bimmers and mercs are really secure from being stolen. So secure that thieves have given up on breaking in to drive away, instead they car-jack now. But it still doesnt stop the thief from breaking in for the camera or mobile phone left on the car seat only to find that the glass shatters but still holds due to the security film. Then again i've left my phone and camera accidentally in my car many times and i was surprised it was still there when i got back.

One can leave a cheap "kamikaze kit" (eg. Nikon EM and E 50/1.8) in the boot ("trunk" for americans) where you can afford to lose / damage and not feel heartbroken about out. You may never know when you would come across something interesting.

A preview screening of a movie recently did not allow any cameras INCLUDING phone cameras. Those with one either had to deposit it with the cinema (and collect later) or elsewhere otherwise they were not allowed in.

Put your equipment (which is sensibly in a bag that doesnt scream "Nikon/Canon in here for grabs!") in the trunk / boot BEFORE you drive to your destination and be aware that you are not followed on the way there.

I actually had my equipment stolen, inc. a 300 f/4L, from a boot of a Merc. No idea how they knew about it, but I suppose someone must have been watching me putting it there just before I locked the car and went into the hotel for a wedding reception.

Somehow, Merc locks are not foolproof....

And that's a sad story for me till today.... oh I miss that white lens. :( :( :(

I've only ever left my cam bag in the car once. At a shopping mall and near the entrace/exit so people traffic is higher than usual. Also, shaded, so no sun etc. A lot of stores, especially the supermarkets like Carrefour, Giant etc. won't let you take bags, and especially cameras in. :(

I don't bother with supermarkets that have bag restrictions. Their loss, I'll just go give my money to stores like Jusco instead!

Insurance coverage is one thing. Looking to replace the equipment will be a bigger headache. I dread to think of having to find a replacement for my qear, even if insurance pays me for my losses. My favourite Tamron 35-105 2.8 is no longer available and is hardly found in the second hand market.

IT covers a wide field.

I think with photography becoming more digitally orientated, the IT unbrella is kinda' absorbing it as well. :D :P

Funnily enough i was browsing through the psots for this particular topic and i came across a post by a friend of mine "CIP".
Well i'm the unlucky bugger who's now left with no cameras!
However after a year of mourning and suffering i've decided to start all over from scratch, its always been the sound of the "CLICK" thats music to my ears, so why stop now right!

Well i don't advise it all leaving the cameras in the boot. Just don't leave stuff behind when visiting the Kiara Cemetery cos from their earnings last year i reckon they'll be back again. Even though the thought of catching the F!@#$Ng BaS!@#Ds had consumed my every thought for the past year, thought i'td be more productive putting my anger and sorrow away and put all that energy into what we all love the most...painting with light!
