A group of photo addicts from PhotoMalaysia participated in the new open air arts & craft market at Laman Seni. The Sunday market is to be held on the first Sunday of the month was officially opened by the Minister of Tourism.
As usual there was a big crowd at the opening. The market was divided into 2 sections, the Arts & Craft section and the General goods section. Off course we belonged to the former category. There were only 2 stalls in the photography category.
A few diehard PM'ers turned up to give their very much appreciated support.
Personal opinion:- this is the place for members to showcase their work, to secure new contacts and net working. Only 2 pieces of work were purchased.....not bad for a fun outing. ;)
Ok will start this thread by posting some snap shots of this event.
This a picture of the female participants and supporter....Yes, female photo addicts.....I know you all are curious to know.

Maxby, which fotos were sold?
I went there for a while with family to see PM stall. There's actually 3 stalls abt photography. PM, Asfon and a lomo stall. :)
From my observation, most stalls are having hard time to sell their product except those comics stall. RM5 for 2 fullcolor print comic.
I also notice that ppl like to see photo but too few who want to buy it. Hmmm.. kinda wonder what kind of photos can sell like hot goreng pisang. :)

true, dont think we really appreciate art yet...but slowly learning lo IMO.
btw, i can see eugene's grace series and jooli's dolls...hehe.
It's true what zerocusa says Malaysians are not willing to spend on art. Be they photos or paintings. They dont see it as investment. But of course it doesnt apply to everybody. There are few who are crazy about collecting arts. Maybe we should think of different ways to market our photos and identify the target group based on their location...maybe posh area like Bangsar is different as Matt says ....
Engku the one which managed to be sold is the one belongs to Matt, his baby ostrich photo was sold one, and another belongs to maxby, his daughter's doll picture.
Well at least not too bad. Matt!! you owe us teh tarik session at mamak!!

Congrat Matt & Maxby.
This event has taught me one thing.
Selling art is like going for a fishing trip. You get your reel and rod ready, find the freshest bait, pick a location where you've been told is THE place to fish, cast the line and wait for the bite.
In this case, we only managed to secure 2 catches. There were lots of fish in the pond but no bites. Maybe the fresh bait was not suitable. Maybe the rod was too long, and maybe, just maybe - the fish were just plain uninterested to eat.
But life goes on....
Oh, here are some of the photos
More photos can be viewed from my website - see link below

Well, the art scene got to start somewhere. At least you now see people attending the arts & craft market sharing the same enthusiasm as the flea market....very encouraging improvement over the past 10 years where people just throw out their junk. and art is only worth the paper it is printed on.
Perhaps, the type of photography should be adapted to this growing trend....like on the site portraiture, photoshop and print.....perhaps in different settings like jungle, beach backgrounds etc. This is for those who are interested in the commercial aspects of photography. (Frankly I don't subscribe to this form of commercialism....there is nothing wrong actually). Have seen such set ups in Chengmai street markets. ;)

Maxby,
I had actually thought of this idea before (as cheesy as it may sound) but I found out that there are no plug points for the electrical equipment in the tents.
I was gonna bring my printer, Mac, and camera for one of those 'ready in 10 mins photos' since I know this would catch on with the Malaysian crowd.

Ah fishing... my expertise ...
Matt, to get the fishes to bite... sometimes you have to sing ...
What I usually when no fish bites, I sing my version of unchained melody ...
Oh, my love, my fishes,
I've hungered for your meat a long,
lonely time. Time goes by so slowly
and time can do so much.
Are you still mine?
so did you sing to the customers?

Anna,
The plan is on. I tried to call Bangsar SC but I couldn't get to speak to the right person. I think someone has to go there and sort it out. Currently I'm rather bz at the moment, perhaps there is a kind volunteer out there who can go to their office in BSC?
It's located at the basement of the building.
The number is 03-2094 7700.

With the expansion of the internet coverage, the art photography and other forms of photography are not only limited to Malaysia.
A friend of mine once registered a foreign sounding company in Canada and brought the company back to Malaysia as a foreign company specialising is telecommunications. Everyone thinks it is a foreign company so they took it in hook line and sinker. ....some idea to think about.
In fact my daughter has received a lot of interest for her craft including photos from foreign collectors....There are already a few requests for reprints of her photos.
I would summarise it this way,-- the whole weekend exercise is an exercise of courage, ingenuity, human relationships, the ability to face rejections and critisms....the beginnings of an entrepreneur.
So to those who have participated, my congratulations to you all for taking this first step when lesser people would have walked away.....
For those who have not, take the next opportunity to do so.

Perhaps will incorporate a PhotoMalaysia banner to give it more exposure mileage....

Not a new concept. Think Esprit is French? Where do you think Hagen Daaz ice cream comes from? Sweden, maybe?
Nope, both American.
Give a product a name that doesn't fit in with the local culture and people will think it's imported & therefore *much* more fashionable to have. You don't need the Internet for that...the guy who started Hagen Daas came up with the name maybe 100+ years ago (and it's a name that has no meaning in any language).
