Well, I dont know exactly what software he used but I think you could do it on any video editing software that has multi layer or multiple video tracks. For example - Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, Avid, Adobe After Effects.....a lot of hard work.

But....I think the music is abit too hard for a wedding event unless this is a Profile Video.

I use Pinnacle studios, I'm not sure whether it has those options. I don't have the pro version. I'll check it when I have time.

Without the aid of animoto... I'd probably use either Adobe After Effects or Apple Motion... It is possible to us avid, vegas pro, final cut pro and premier pro, but it'd take agest to achieve one visual effect. AAE or Motion allows you to have full control and manipulation to the footage of which you want to edit. For myself, I'd use AAE since I do not know the basis of Motion. :)

so yeah
:)

Adobe Premiere is a video editing software. This is where you put your video in a sequence of your choice by cutting away the unused clips. Then you add some transitions to make the video more interesting. Also you can do titles for the video and finally add & adjust audio to your video.
Adobe After Effects is where you make the video stand out with more effects which editing softwares cant do.
IE: sometimes you see a ray of light running accross a movie title, glows that you see on people or products.....many more.

Basically most video editing softwares allows you to do picture slide show and surely they allow you to include videos as well. If they dont accept the video, then maybe due to codec issues or they just dont accept that type of files ie: avi, mpeg, dvix, m2v......
Sure, AAE can do this but I think it a bit complicated to learn the software compared to editing softwares like, Premeire, Final Cut Pro, Pinnacle, Ulead Video Studio, Sony Vegas, Edius..... and so on.
Cant tell you which one would be easier cause it all depends on the you. You may just find that the complicated one easier. Your brains and mine are not the same!

Good Luck friend.
