April 2013 - peiling

  • April 2013 - peiling

We are proud to announce our PhotoMalaysia featured photographer of the month

    - April 2013 -

peiling - aka - Lee Pei Ling

Here is the interview with her:

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am a Penangite currently residing in Tanzania. I’m a true macro aficionado who is as obsessed as I am inspired by the small, small world around me. I started taking an interest in digital photography in 2008, and my curiosity and interest gradually led me to the world of macro photography.

I am a homemaker for now. My website is Inside there’s a selection of my work, which I think best, represent me now. As well as interviews with various magazine inside and outside Malaysia. I am also selling stock images via Gettyimages.

Q: What is your photography history?

I left the advertising world in year 2010. Imagine the amount of free time I was suddenly left to deal with, so I decided to pursue a different challenge in life.

I was very much inspired by Andrey Pavlovfrom from Russia and also Magdalena Wasiczek from Poland.
I was using both 50D and 5D Mark III. Kenko extension tube, Nissin Di866 which now upgraded to Canon EX-RT, lastly the ‘must have’ Canon f2.8 100mm macro, my next best lens is a Carl Zeiss 50mm, f1.4 which creates unbelievable beautiful bokeh.

I am a dreamer, I like to create surreal, out of the world images from the ordinary everyday-life object, turning them into something beautiful and magical in my viewfinder. I do not just capture the moment but creating it is what I love to do the best.

I usually start by gathering ideas from surfing the internet, browsing photography books, spending times in my garden or even paying a visit to the local supermarket. Then I will sketch out the image I wanted on drawing board, follow up by preparing the props and sets, waiting for the right time of the day (depending on the lighting on my sketch), start shooting and post editing with Photoshop. It usually takes up a couple of days from the thinking process to the end result.

Q: Any advise for aspiring PhotoMalaysia members?

Develop your own style, it is very important. With all the expensive gadgets and high-end camera and technology equipment available, to be able to take a good photo is almost a given. However, if you manage to find your own style, your will be instantly separated from the crowd. Perhaps you do not need any expensive camera to achieve it either.

I am showcasing my work at, more of my latest update from

I'm sure many of you have seen pictures especially Landscapes. The Transition between Sky and Foreground. The Bright and the Dark transition. If you look carefully, you will notice a carefully processed one and the less careful. The Less careful ones are the halos which some may say its ok. To me its not natural to look. That is what I wish to perfect. What I'll be sharing here is to reinforce what I understand…it took me quite awhile to digest. I'm not perfect. Its troubling me for some time. Having A GND Filter or No Filter method? As long as it gets the job done faster choose which workflow you feel comfortable with. In the end is the final outcome of the picture. Below will be in a series and breaks here, through pictures and explanation. I myself can return for reference and comprehend if I forget the steps. I don`t write it down or explain I will forget. There may be shortcuts here and there though.Feel free to sh...

  • Soaring like an Eagle ... and Flying with the wind
A couple of weeks ago I started a brand new love affair. I want to soar like an eagle and fly with the wind. I've started training to qualify for a licence to fly a Powered Paraglider. You put a motor with a prop on your back, harness yourself to a parachute wing, start the motor, run a short take off run from almost anywhere, and then fly off into the sunset like below :

The Paraglider itself is an amazing subject to shoot:

Apart from the adrenalin rush associated with when you put your life at risk, the aim is to shoot photos from a perspective not usually available to most people. Here's a combo selfie while flying a po...
