  • ...it feels good to be back!!!

    Dear Guys,

After a long Sabbatical, I am finally back to the fold! Just received my Pentax K01 (Yellow) with 40mm f/2.8 XS. Hasn't got time to play much but have more or less went through the whole menu system and functions. Seems very similar to K20D/K7/K5/645D which I am already very familiar with. Charging the battery now...

Preliminary findings and image quality is almost similar to a K5, or should I just call this a 'mirrorless K5' ? Hahahaha!!

I have a major role to play to assist DSC World to launch the K01 in the market. Have discussed and lined up some exciting plans. Need lots of collaboration. So, listen up guys....let's regroup and 'roll out'!

    More updates soon.

William, Autobot, Jesster....let's 'meet' and discuss!

    Regards,
    Wesley

Some test shots done this morning. The dynamic range is as good as a Nikon D7000! Colour reproduction is pure Pentax signature, vivid but never overly done. Very very nice!

Colors are out of camera...I just need to do a very quick retouch on contrast in Adobe Lr to bring the images to life.

How do you find holding it?

I know when I was playing with a unit yesterday, it took me a while to get use to the missing VF and revert back to looking at the screen...

Well, actually not much of an issue to me. Maybe I've held so many mirrorless cameras in the past 2.5 years doing training. I like the hand "holdability" of the K-01. Feels good, and all the buttons are at the right places when I needed them. I use a lot of manual focusing, so the placement of the switch, and focus peaking really help here. The LCD pixel density is up on par with the best out there. Images (even JPEGs) out of camera is so ready to use. Typical Pentax...in the good way!

I'll have church choir practice tonight. Gonna do some high ISO shots, and convert to B&W. See how...

the yellow k01 really looks outstanding. i like. too bad no evf.
that's the big drawback, far as i can tell.

The K-01's lack of a VF is certainly a little odd, but perhaps it's targeted at people who would really rather hold the camera at a distance and frame with the LCD. The button placement and build quality seems to confirm this as it really is more comfortable and there's less of a need for a grip cause you're not holding it up to your face.

It's a different mentality, and I can tell you that sometimes, framing with an LCD is really a nicer option.

don't mind framing with the lcd -- until have to do it out in the blinding bright malaysian sun. then it becomes a problem.
but yeah, mirrorless is the way to go. i'm kind of tired of unreliable phase detect AF. yeah, talking about pentax.

Not a deal breaker...just use a very simple solution and you have both a LCD Liveview and electronic viewfinder. Get one of these:

I use it extensively on my other DSLR especially when manual focusing on anything 35mm and longer. Works like a charm! Solve the sun problem too.

urm, ya, i've seen that. not for everyone, though, no? i mean, the whole point of mirrorless is a more compact camera. and accurate CD af.
the k01 is bulky enough already leh, tai lou, albeit quite nicely plump. and damn cun in yellow. dey shd have fitted a viewfinder on the right side
of the camera, like the nex7. still, i might get it for my daughter when the price is more agreeable. right now, i have to say the oly OMD is looking
mighty fine. everything you would want in a mirrorless.

maybe pentax give us a digital k1000? okay, end of daydreaming, back to work.
