  • Good effort?

When you peeps say good effort, does it mean the photo is too humdrum to comment on?

I personally think it's better to comment on the image than comment on one's effort..

    Re: Good effort?

Good effort = Hope to see you do better next time? Sometimes many newbie photographers did their best only to get some rather hoohum results, its good to encourage them to improve themselves.
Photography is like an adventure of a lifetime!

      Re: Good effort?

Encouragement alone would do little. Some criticism ( If the photo needs any that is ) would be MUCH more beneficial to the 'newbie', so he/she can learn.

        Re: Good effort?

I agree with bro Dan95. I personally prefer some insight into my shots, whether good (so I can continue the good work) or bad (so I can target areas for improvement).

In that respect, I totally do not appreciate the "sorry mate" comments, or "doesn't work for me" comments. I think this is patronising and not constructive.

If someone says "Good" - You have an idea that you did something right. Perhaps continue the good work! Of course knowing what you did right could be better.
If someone says "Bad" - At least say what you think is so bad about the shot, since good/bad is so subjective.

        Am I making any sense?

          Re: Good effort?

There's many way to interpret 'good effort'.

Let's say that a newbie wakes up at 4 AM, drives to a good location to take some shot of a sunrise. He uses a GND filter and he captures some images using the slow shutter. That to me, is genuinely 'good effort' - doesn't matter if the image is great or not. He has certainly put thought and effort into creating his image, and that itself should not be ignored.

A photograph is certainly the final product, but I believe that photographers should also be able to appreciate and understand the process/thought/work that one uses to create an image. And by commending on that process itself, we can encourage people to shoot more - by telling them that they have somehow got something right. Let's not forget that some people work better with encouragement rather than sheer criticism. Of course, we're mostly talking about people who are just starting out in photography here. This doesn't necessarily apply to more advanced photographers.

I'm quite fed up of comments of this nature. Though I'm sure I too have made comments like the ones listed in the past... One of the many reasons why I did/do so is because of the fear of being badged as a 'smartarse'.

              Re: Good effort?

I agree with Ralverd. Usually when I say good effort, it means that I see that the photographer had use some thought and planning into taking that photo. It is the key to success. The picture may not be great but in due time his hard work will pay off. Photographers who just snap away will have a longer road to success. Sometimes I don't feel like the photographer is there already in terms of technical skills but the artistic part is catching up, so best to comment, good effort.

                Re: Good effort?

I guess if you're new and the work is decent enough (though not great) then the effort is good. But if you stubbornly post over and over and over the same old mistakes, show no improvement and start having fits when people give constructive criticism, then on your part there's been no effort to improve.

... a good effort here by the poster ... ... just joking ... i do use it but very very rare -- it's only for something which I see there is something worth complimenting even it is normal or bad to most ... but very rare as I have said ... ...
