This month, out featured photographer was chosen because of his unique way of using his photos and art as his form of communication. This is good example to the members of Photomalaysia on expressing our own artistic representation through art and photography.
Here is the interview with TungTong. :
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I have been a full-time artist for the past 20 years and I do different genres of Art forms and medium which include Chinese ink, acrylic, collage, sculpture, in abstract and super realistic paintings.
I have opened 6 solo Exhibitions and have also released 6 art books in conjunction with the Exhibitions. Prior to being a full-time artist, I was an Art Director in an Advertising firm.
You can view my photos in my flickr here
Q: What got your started in Photography?
In the past, my involvement to Photography was only in taking snapshots at certain occasions. With the advancement in IT, I came to realize the convenience with the use of digital cameras which allows the pictures to be downloaded or even to perform your our own post processing which is much more convenient than the film days. I became interested and I bought my first SLR which was about 4 years ago.
Some of my friends introduced Crossing Bridges (An annual photography trip organized by Malaysia , Singapore , Vietnam and Indonesia) and I registered for my first photography trip to Hanoi . There were 50 over photographers from Malaysia , Singapore , Vietnam and Indonesia. During the trip, they shared their pictures / stories & experiences with me and that motivated me to start exploring the Art of Photography.
All my life, I have used Art as a medium to communicate with people. Now, I feel that I have found a new language.
Q: Describe your style of photography
I prefer black / white and monotones which I felt that with the absence of color, I am better able to appreciate the depth of the picture. I like the ‘raw’ feel. However, everyone’s perception will change over time, and I might explore the world of color in the future.
I enjoy nature and making new friends from all over the world, especially children. Their innocence & sincerity that flow out from their eyes, their laughter, have affected me, and I try my best to capture their emotions / happiness in my pictures. I value these feelings and believe they will transcend through space and time.
The structure of my photos include music rhythm, stories , and the power of Tension.
The horizon is endless. I try to keep an open mind when I search for themes. In post processing, I try to enhance the depth of the picture, thus fulfilling the “vertical limits”.
Q: Any advise for PhotoMalaysia members?
Besides taking pictures in Singapore , I have traveled frequently to counties like Cambodia , Thailand , Indonesia , China , Vietnam & Malaysia in recent years just to take pictures. Every trip is a valuable lesson and I have accumulated a lot of experience. I really respect the lifestyle of these people, and appreciate their friendship. These trips have taught me to treasure Life more.
All the pictures that I have taken have impacted me and triggered my emotions and I hope that the viewer can also feel it.
Nature is beautiful, so is Life itself, because we share, with love.
Originality is a very important aspect in art, be it Art form or Photography. So, always be creative!
