  • Birding - Flash or no flash?

    For all the sifus.

When using a flash for bird photography, what set-up or accessories would you recommend?

I mean, without getting the photo to look like it came from a studio.

Re: Birding - Flash or no flash?

    Hi welcome to pm,
flash the bird, can become a hot topic.
both welfare of the bird, and photography view can be very personal.

some of the country(like hong kong and taiwan) were not allow to use flash for wild bird...

i use flash for forest bird most of the time(however, i don't like to flash chick).
just share with you a old thread:
    http://www.photomalaysia.com/forums/...use+your+flash
    hope this will help.

          Thanks guys.

That is why I was asking.

Personally, I do not like the flashed look too.
But like liewwk said, some situation can't be help... can it?

So, I guess it is to saveup for bigger guns then.

to me is very subjective. for me even flash are used it should be for light filling only or else the feathers colors of the birds will be un-natural.

              Hi Bitty,
About flash's image not nice, it's depend the photographer's flash skill...

About saving the cost of flash to but bigger gun, then i don't understand, because a best flash cost only rm 1500 around, but a longer lense like 300mm f2:8 will cost you rm16k around..

No offence, but if your bird under the tree shadow,,, the only thing you can do to is: flash...

in most cases, its solely depends on the situations whether to use flash or not. depends.

Re: Birding - Flash or no flash?

Flash or not to flash, that is a BIG question.

I always try to use flash for fill-in only, unless I need to freeze the moment in the very low light environment.

You can find the photos posted by Harlequin. He is another sifu who taught me the fill-in flash and GN. He has posted some flash techniques in some of the threads here.

so, to use flash or not to use?
The first picture is out of focus, and need too +EV.
For me in this situation, I just make record shot.

                            Photographer:
I agree, whether to use flash or not depends on the situations .
If no flash, in some circumstance just give up or make a record shot.
Flash, more easly to get successful picture, but the light is abit unnatural.
Unless U are good in skill.

                            Birds:
Surely don't like flash or even any disturbing behaver (include bird watching).

To add +EV, shutter speed will going down and the image will resulting in blur.
For me the flash is a good choice. Furthermore, you are not that lucky to get 2nd chance for the same bird.
surely birds don't like flash, but birds also don't like human too(bird watcher).most of the time the bird will fly away when i make a move, but surprisingly they don't care if i shot with flash as long as i stand still.

Yes, skill to using flash is not that easy.
