Hi guys. Playing around with my friend's camera and macro lens the other day has convinced me I need one!

As I'm going to be back in KL soon I'm hoping you might be able to help.

Looking for the prices in KL of the Tamron 90mm macro lens - this one: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/R...ns-Review.aspx

And also the Canon 100mm macro: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/R...ns-Review.aspx

Would love the Canon 100mm L but thinking I can't really stretch to that right now.. still interested in the price if anyone knows!

    Thanks

Well the EF 100 f2.8 Macro USM is no longer available new (unless of course it is old stock). It is available in the used market segment. If I am not mistaken the price ranges from RM1500 to RM1700. Of course RM1700 is on the high end for the used price range, so it would be prudent to bargain it down a bit.

Perhaps the draw back in this lens is the lack of the IS feature. But then you would not use it without a tripod anyway without a flash setup.

What I like about the EF 100 f2.8 Macro USM is that the lens does not extend, unlike the Tamron 90mm. That said the Tamron is also a fine performer and is cheaper than the EF 100mm macro. Some years back I had a friend buy a used unit for RM900, so it might be cheaper now.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know the 100mm (non L) has been discontinued.

How much roughly is the Tamron 90mm new? And the Canon L 100mm - does anyone know?

Well I think it has been discontinued in the US (but may be I am wrong about the Malaysian market). Nevertheless I am sure there are old stocks lying around. So I am sure you can still find it brand new and complete with warranty.

Shashinki has it listed: http://shashinki.com/shop/canon-100m...sia-p-753.html (with a price reduction RM1899.)

Shashinki also has the Tamron: http://shashinki.com/shop/tamron-90m...mic-p-577.html (RM1495 from the authorized agent and the import is RM200 less.)

The street price probably won't vary too far from that.

I hope you realize that when you venture into macro photography and beyond, you will need a good sturdy tripod, a remote release and learn how to lock up the DSLR mirror. And at least one flash and a small reflector.
