IMAC or MACBOOK

Am just wondering, I saw some of the pro photograph are using this product as their image editing hardware.... Why is it so? are their softwares easy to use? or is there any other reason why they are using this instead of normal IBM product? please share your experience... Tq in advance..

Firstly, I am no expert in this area. I have been using IBM's product with TFT non glare screen all this while but changed to a MacBook Pro a year ago and find that processing my images is much easier now. What I see is what I get with a Mac. With the high resolution screen on a Mac, I find it easier to tune my images if needed.

I have been using Mac all along for 22 years already. Never worked with PC so cannot really say.

But from what I know, it used to be that it was very much easier and faster to work on Photoshop and other design / illustration software on a Mac than on a PC. Over the years, PCs have caught up. BUT... recently someone posted a "speed test", where we are supposed to do a long list of things using Photoshop and note down the timing for the entire task. One of my friends has a very high end (self-assembled) PC, with top of the range processor, plenty of RAM, etc, total set up costs I think more than S$5,000. I have an entry level iMac that costs me S$1,788. I thought I would surely do badly but.... surprise, surprise my timing was very very close to that of my friend. I was either a bit faster, or just a few seconds slower, I forgot. But it was very close.

My friend, however, was not surprised. He said the Mac has a much simpler OS (operating system) and that is why the Mac performs faster.

The other thing, of course, is that the Mac monitor is very good and pixs look very nice - and natural. On a PC system, you will need to spend big money on a high end monitor. Regular low to mid-priced monitors are not good.

If you compare spec for spec, Mac costs a bit more. Used to cost a lot more but the gap has narrowed. Mac accessories / software also tend to cost a bit more than PC. BUT... as mentioned earlier, my entry level Mac is as fast as my friend's high-end PC. On that basis, I would say if you compare performance and the "shiok factor" Mac is very much cheaper.

I use both home brew custom PC and slick macbook/pro.

OS X Lion = ram hungry sucker. No good. (My much older macbook which runs Snow Leopard seem more efficient OS for spec). It also turned into a pseudo ipad interface.

MacGlare Pro's screen = looks really good but the colours are all wrong.


home built pc = you can build it to your taste and run whatever OS you want. If you load it up with Win7, you can't go wrong (the GUI is really good compared to previous windoze versions), but must know what to tweak, what to turn on or off for a potentially blindingly fast machine.

by the way, I am one of those working photographers who use a PC for work- my macglare pro is only used to tether the camera on locations. At every other time this mac is used to surf porn, watch youtube, etc...

Nowadays the differences are marginal, but in the old days graphic software was only ported for MacIntosh. Nowadays Photoshop on a PC is similar as to Photoshop on a Mac, although the commands slightly differ.

Mac OS is believed to be more robust and has better management of memory hence the overall performance experience is more pleasant. But in the end, if you are using a high-end PC for similar processing, nobody would see the difference in the final results.

i just bought my iMac on 1st sept 2011. after 2 months, i feel that some of the thing still pc good. example like file management, maybe i was too "pc" person, i found that mac file management hard to use (correct me if I'm wrong). this make me decided to install winxp inside the mac.
BUT all those adobe program like illustrator, photoshop, indesign..etc, running in mac is 100x smoother than running in window. maybe my pc too old, but just got the feeling it run smooth now.. this is only my personal opinion...

I bought my MacBook Pro few weeks ago and I love it so much. The problem I'm facing is most of customers don't use Mac and my photos become too dull for them >.<" Any idea how to solve this?

Having working Photoshop & Premiere Pro CS5 (Master suite as well) on both Windows 7 Ultimate and OSX Lion, I find that the colors output from OSX Lion are dull compared to Windows7. All were done with my same process technique and workflow. However the OSX does give a more natural skin tones while the Windows7 will tanned the skin tones more. However some channel tweaks and WB can solve this. The bottom line is just a matter of preference to the viewers' final appreciation of the hardwares, softwares, gears, output and prints.

I thought the title is comparing iMac and Macbook? How come it become OSX vs Windows already? Anyway, I was given choice between MBP 15" and iMac 27", the specs are almost similar, the difference is just the processor (i7 vs QC i5), and graphics. In the end, I've decided to get the iMac 27", mainly because i need a bigger screen to do my graphics. If mobility is the concern, then go for MBP, the top of the range one if you can afford it. One more thing, if you're getting the iMac, change the magic mouse to trackpad, as normal wireless mouse you can get one for less than RM20.
