Since you do not mentioned I have to say it anyway, have you tried the card in another computer/card reader to see if you can access the card? Have you tried another SD card in the Macinthosh? First you wish to rule out what is not causing the problem. Memory cards easily loose reliability over a period of time. Sometimes it is a pin issue so that could be a problem on the Macintosh side to verify as well.

I have just purchased a Kingston multi card reader and solved the problem.
They don't read all cards.
I'm just a gearhead
I hate it when Macs don't "just work."
Mac is known to have problems with other manufacturers devices.
I have a few thumb-drives by Patriot but there is one Patriot 8GB Swing USB Flash Drive (Red) that cannot be read on my MBP. It is fine on my PC. Just cannot understand it.

Mac not reading SD card with the built in slot is a common issue. My mac is the same. Sometimes can sometimes cannot. Using external reader is the only solution so far.
