    Hi guys,

My university is going to have a 3-day graduation soon and I will be one of the photographers (they will hire other people also). So how much should I charge them? Hourly or per session/day?

The first day will be night time (7-9pm probably), and the next will be Saturday and Sunday (about 8am-12pm). I have a Canon 500D attached to a 18-55mm kit lens. No additional flashgun available. After that weekend, I will batch edit them by myself and send copies of photos using a DVD. How much (money) based on my service should I offer to them?

    Thanks for your comments/suggestions/advice.

Night event and you don't have a flashgun? Don't look for trouble my friend.

p/s : Photographer don't charge by what kit they used, but what they can produce. Look at your photo and ask yourself what is your value.
I'm a newbie and forever will I be.......

The venue will be inside a well-lit building so I might have to boost up my ISO to avoid blur and probably shoot RAW. Anyway, I'll try to figure out the value for my service. Thanks for the feedback.

Looking at your confidence level, better offer your services with a caveat.

ie: In case the delivery is not up to your expectations please note that I'm using only kit lens and no external flashgun.........

The going rate for a photographer using kit lens is RM50.90
With a 24-70, you can charge much more, maybe RM70-RM80!

You are right Dan. That is if kit lens + strobe. Without flashgun, I think it is worth RM39.90

If you do not have any confidence to be a photographer...offer free service. If you have, equipment does not matter.

But If you can lug around a 70-200 with a pro body ( doesnt matter if you use it or not ), you can charge double!

Maybe, you can go for free of charge to build up your portfolio and reputation first.

Re: how much to charge with only a kit lens?

Seriously, jokes aside, the kit you're bringing is no issue. f/2.8 is certainly no issue. Many event photogs shoot at f/4 on average - just to make sure the posing group shots look nice and sharp in the sweet spot.

However, since I'm primarily a flash-using photographer, I thinks its suicide to shoot evening events without an external flash & some diffusers/bouncers.

500D has decent noise control but since it is a cropped body, shooting at slower shutters would be a problem. With reasonably steady hands, I can shoot at 1/30 with a FF body (at a focal length of 24mm to 30mm) and get a sharp, well-exposed shot. You might struggle doing that with a 500D + 18-55 kit.

In light of the above, perhaps you might want to go FOC to build your portfolio? Just a suggestion...

    Hope everything turns out ok!

Re: how much to charge with only a kit lens?

Kit lens? Does it matter? What if the 'kit' lens is top tier lens worth $$$$? Anyway, its you final product that matter. Not so much on what gears you use. Give an amateur a 5D, give a pro a point and shoot camera. You will be surprised. Seen a lot of pros use cheapo camera and take photos better than intermediate DSLR users. Make the most out of what you have. Learn your gears. Find a solution to a problem, you will be surprised that you actually dont need to buy a more expensive one, once you figure out that you can get around the problem just by using your less expensive gears. Of course, there are limitations of what any gears can do until you need a better one.

    Flashgun is a must here.

Even with D800 & a bunch of high end glass it can still turn into a nightmare...
