PMPE – “Pacu Jawi”, Padang, Indonesia from 29th June to 1st July 2012

We are pleased to announce our PMPE, a PhotoSafari to Padang, Indonesia. The highlights of this PhotoSafari trip is the adrenaline rush Bull Run or Pacu Jawi as the Indonesian called it.
Pacu Jawi is usually held at the end of the harvesting season. Bull breeders and Buyers come together and trade their bulls. Bulls are strong animals and often used in the ploughing and tilling of the land for rice planting. The Sellers would hire Jockeys to run the bulls to exhibit the strengths of the animals. After each run the bulls are cleaned and herded into a display pen for the Buyers to choose.

This year’s Pacu Jawi is organised specially for our PMPE, PhotoSafari Trip. A warning for those who wants to go on this trip. This is a very dangerous event to shoot. I have seen Photographers being injured while photographing this race. Please come at your own risk, we are not liable to any personal injuries whatsoever.

Besides the Pacu Jawi we will be photographing morning markets, sunrise and sunset at the Meninjau Lake and Bukit Tinggi.

its good to have a x2 Teleconverter on a 70-200mm that will make it a constant aperture of f/5.6
Still safer than sorry.

I think the 2x tele converter is not necessary. Some of our participants shot from very close range.

That was me in the last PMPE 'Paju Jawi'. That's the unexpected risks in the event that you have to face if you want to be close on the runaway bulls.

Shot taken at 220mm, with a 100-400mm lens, f/8, 1/500s.
Better to shoot f/8.0 to f/11.0 to get jockey and bulls in focus (DOF) if you are shooting them straight-on charging at you.
AI Servo, max burst rate. If your camera allows you to make setting to your AF tracking, select the fastest tracking. The bulls come charging straight at you very fast.
Better be safe, stand further away with longer telephoto lens, as long as no one blocks your view.

Looks like not many have shot this with manual telephoto lens judging from the non-response, but I am sure it can be done (Photogs have done it way before electronic was included in camera)

In saying so, I do know one participant from last year PhotoSafari shot with "pre-focusing" as she told me her lens wasn't fast enough to do AF-tracking.

Seriously, you'll be just a photographer that is able to capture the crowd and the sceneries, if you're using manual lens. This event is so action packed, and the bulls are so fast and have no specific direction that they run. That's makes anticipating and using a manual lens extremely difficult. You may get 1 out of a hundred, so buy, borrow an AF zoom lens. Otherwise be contented to sit on the bank and snap the sceneries.
