Hasselblad Cuts Prices, Makes Owning A Medium Format Cheaper

At last you can really look a Hasselblad in the eye. And not blink.

We’ve discounted prices on a number of models by up to 22.9% – that’s a massive 3,565 euros off the cost of a new H4D-31 (incl 35-90mm lens). And now our ultimate photography tool – the H4D-60, is down 6,200 euros to €23,900.

The time for change has come. Until now for many the idea of owning a Hasselblad has been little more than a dream. Just an aspiration.

Now the H4D-31 (incl. 35-90mm lens) is reduced by 3,565 euros; H4D-40 unit is down by 1,000 euros; the H4D-50 by 3,000; the H4D-60 is down 6,200 euros; the H4D-50MS by 3,000; the H4D-200MS by 4,500 and the CFV-50 Digital Back by 2,000 euros.

Unfortunately it's going to be very tough for Hasselblad to survive if they have to rely on a third party to provide their imaging sensors. This price drop is a direct reaction to the likes of the D800 and it is a real threat as you can see how many reviews and articles have been surfacing comparing the D800 to the Hasselblad.

If you just look at the past trend for digital photography. 10 years ago a DSLR was a such a rare item (remember the 1999 Nikon D1? 2.7MP). Today even school kids are carrying SLRS and even entry level DSLR are over 24MP! Fast forward 5 years from now it would not be surprising to see FX or larger sensors and 50MP being the norm for a camera body costing less than RM5K.

I think to be fair, Hasselblad caters to a different market altogether. Those who buy know what they are buying, it is not an impulsive purchase.

I wonder who is the organization offering the discount and trade in as it is not clearly stated. Still indeed the camera set-ups are highly priced and I dare to say there are very good alternatives for most probably more attractive prices.

Ofcos with that price, the product should be world top class, I like the image by hasselblad speacially their large format film camera. Even their old film camera still selling in high price hahaha...to me is high price.

It is a high price to many, even those who need to make a decision to use it professionally. But large format? I don't think Hasselblad went ever beyond medium format.

For professional yes ofcos, if I'm a pro and photograph my main job, hasselblad will for sure in my wish list hahahahahaha...
