I am using nikon d5100 now with kit lens, i am considering to buy my first new lens.
I like to take landscape, scenery and building photos, and i know i need a wide angle right?
but I dun knw very details of how to grade or examine wide angle lens, and what model or brand to buy(i consider 3rd party also)
and if my budget is below RM1000, which lens can I buy??

Try looking for a used Tamron 17-50mm non-VC. That's the only one I knoe which is suitable and falls within your budget.

Either tamron 17-50 non-vc BIM version or samyang 14mm manual lens is suitable to your interest.

Remember to get the tamron with built in motor (BIM) or else you cannot autofocus on your d5100. It is a standard zoom lens with multi purpose (mainly for reportage and portrait).

Very wide angle lens does not need autofocus and samyang fits the landscape, scenery and building shooting purpose with 21mm in 35mm equivalent.

For me, I will get tamron and sell the kit lens off, LoL.

Nikon 18-55mm should do the job. Your budget is below RM1000, and I don't think you can get any lens in this price with a better IQ than the kit lens. Save up the money for Nikon 10-24mm if possible. Otherwise Tokina 11-16mm (around RM 1900) may help if you like to manual focus.

I am not a expert but 18mm (kit lens) is good enough for most places and wide angle lenses are relatively expensive. Under 1k very susah unless 2nd hand or 3rd hand. Or Unless u want ultra wide then go for tokina.

tamron 17-50 also can be wide-angle? then what's the different with other wide-angle lens Nikon 10-24mm and Tokina 11-16mm?
is it depends on different of angle view on those lens?

Tokina 11-16 is out of your budget, and it will not AF on our camera body. I suggest you get the Sigma 10-20/4-5.6 HSM or the Tokina 12-24 ver II.

In principle focal length <40mm can be considered wide angle ; 40-60mm normal and >60mm telephoto. So it is true 17-50mm can be wide but 10-24 is ultra wide angle.
