BTS Engagement of A Good Friend

Hey guys,

Been lurking around this forum for few days. Looking for C&C and inspirations from renowned photographers. So I am just gonna share few pics of a recent Malay engagement which I shot 2 weeks ago. Got my Canon 550D for about 4 weeks ago and 50mm 1.8 and the engagement is the first time trial. Never had a basic nor tried any DSLR before, just been fiddling with aperture, speedshooter, Iso. The pictures have been retouched with CS3 for about 4 layers - curves, saturation, sharpness and some other things that I just throw into. Feedback are most welcome.

Hi poopeson, glad to read the feedback. Seems that I have a problem with post-processing pictures. or maybe i havent mastered white balance technique.

i have to say that you have good angle when you snap photo.. but your whitebalance is off.. its too yellow.. i love to shoot in white balance 'K' and i used around 5000k.. K will give me vibrant colour.. temperature of 5000k will give you colour of Electronic Flash.. for more understanding infomation regarding white balance you can refer here:http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tut...te-balance.htm

thanks purple. ive been getting the same critics from my frens n my bro. White balance is something im learning by now, kinda tricky when its underexpose room/under tungsten. does AWB ever give any good result in your opinion? cos i read tips from Jenny Sun that she uses AWB. the angle is a result of a very limited space for me to move around. n thanks alot for the link! hv a good day!

Just use AWB and shoot RAW files. It gives you better control when adjusting WB. In Photoshop, you should be able to set the WB base on tungsten, fluorescent and so on. You can then tweak it by going up or down on the K value. I also calibrate my screen every two weeks. If your screen colors are not correct, you are not going to be able to adjust the correct colors.

thanks for the tips, ill try using RAW files and make comparison with my own custom WB.

Hi Jeanette!

Please excuse my comments and suggestions:

#1 - I like this composite shot. However, shots seem blurry. Given the amount of natural light, you should be able to up the Shutter Speed.
#2 - The idea was there but I think the execution fell short
#3 - A classic shot in a Malay wedding. However, personally, I never thought this angle was flattering.
#4 - This is a decent of shot of a kid at the event
#5 - Looks like an overly-artistic shot?

You shot without a flash, yes? Canon 550D + EF50mm II f/1.8? Try going about ISO 500-800 (tweak depending on amount of light in the house), Shutter at about 1/80-1/100 but not more than 1/160 (tweak depending on amount of light in the house), an f stop of about f/3.5 - f/5 (depending on type of shot - single portrait or group). Oh yes, and can you manually adjust the K? Set it about 3,500K - 4,300K (the more direct sunllight, the K should get a little higher).

Try that out for size!

Hi jeanette...

First of all, i'm also using 550d with 50mm...its almost 2 years now...and i do have white balance problem few months back...and thankfully, i'm improving the white balance from time to time....

My tips on improving white balance are:
1. Since 550d doesnt have feature on adjusting Kelvin as its only have custom which you can set by using grey card. How to use the grey card?...ask mr. google...
2. During post processing, if you use Lightroom, just simply point out the white balance selector onto the most grey colour area on your image.
3. Keep on shooting, experimenting, learning, asking, observing, studying, testing and a lot more of --ing words which will make you happier with your own pictures...
