I always get this question asked.
When I come up with a picture I shot and share...and it catches their eye,.....They FIRST ask me what camera I have.
Which model/camera make ? will be the next question.
How much I pay for it ?
Many are fixated by the idea an expensive one gives the best.

The last question they would ask.....Do I do weddings ?

I know exactly what you mean. And it seems many people think that the camera is the all and end all for a good photo.

A few years ago I was in LiJiang, China, taking a night shot with my camera on a tripod. Some Chinese guy walked passed and commented to his friend, "He looks like a professional photographer, but his camera is not."

I have always thought that the skill lies in understanding the variables in taking a photo, and understanding the capabilities and limitations of the camera used.

I suppose that China guy would buy a top of the range camera and set it to auto, and then shoot away mindlessly.

Aiyo this things i always encounter..
When I shooting runway like last month , I was shooting on a EOS 40D he ask me why I dont use 5D3 , so I ask him back , why should I shoot with a 5D3? He say it can make better pictures I told him , a good picture is made by the person behind the camera , not the camera.. He left looking at me with a stupid face like hating on me...

And the “I Know A Guy Who Can Do It Much Cheaper" and “My Brother Can Shoot The Wedding" happens quite often when you meet up with a new couple and their families.. Usually family members is thinking all about saving cost.. We are called professional for a reason. What you pay is what you get!

When I used a D80 for an event shoot recently, I was asked this question, "You are pro, you should be using at least D700!"

I just smiled at him and said, investing in better quality lens and skill will go far. He seems a bit enlightened.....

had the same situation before... was using D90... the guy told me pro should be using FX...

Then i told him, my only FX is my old trusty F50 film SLR...

Those were issues much debated and I agree to most.

Better cameras don't take better pictures but they do meet higher requirements. If you shoot fine art or family pictures any cameras will do but let's not deny that the success rate of a D4 is much higher than a D80 when it comes to high speed photography. Also when it comes to serious resolution and detail medium format still rules.

I think many would agree that the camera you ought to have is the one that suits your needs best. Since the 5D3, I've seen many mediocre shots from dudes who were mediocre before splurging on the latest gear. The only difference is a lighter wallet and an over-inflated misplaced confidence.

Funny thing is, those same dudes actually discuss with me on how they shouldn't be struggling with low light shots (seeing that they are using the 5D3), but in fact, they still are having difficulty. When I outperform them on the 50D, they can't believe it.

Of course, as Loveshots has pointed out, some circumstances may have higher requirements which lower end bodies may not be able to cope with.

So what does one need?

I think it common nowaday, ppl will look the camera model as some sort of quality guarantee. I help my fren shoot wedding once with 1000d. How intimidating when the family member were shooting with d7000

Actually I'm still looking for a class or short courses to learn more about the technique in photography... and understand what photography is all about... I picked up photography as a hobby coz its the most convenient one and I have no other hobby beside eating... Haha!

I like reading that Jetfynn story about his student in photography.... and mingthein's blog also helps to enlighten me on certain aspect of photography...

Then again I can't deny the fact that better gears helps greatly (as I have not enuf knowledge to prepare for the event) Previously I have a D80 and I'm not happy with it... Then I bought a D7k and I can shoot better! Then itchy hand say buy D800 and I'm happier..!!

I also realise that not many people like to share the technique and the preparation made for their shoot... I cannot visualise how the sifus do it... For example, I don't know how to do a panning shot (with all the gears that I have) until a friend taught me... Haha!

One more thing about the "professionals" ... who are not professionals at all.... There are people like me who don't mind paying good money for good services... and it applies to all including doctors, specialist, chefs and photographers...

The reputation of the individual or the firm is very very important and it is up to the person or firm to build it up... else you will be just another average pro photographer... Your ability to convince your customer and explain to them the time and effort taken to produce the end results is very important...

I have come across some "pro" photographers which come up with mediocre photos... Don't get me wrong, there are so many people out there who offered "pro" services... if you know what I mean...

You can even see lots of misconception on this forum discussion on the uses of lenses... you buy F1.4 becoz u want lowlight...
