I think many would agree that the camera you ought to have is the one that suits your needs best. Since the 5D3, I've seen many mediocre shots from dudes who were mediocre before splurging on the latest gear. The only difference is a lighter wallet and an over-inflated misplaced confidence.
Funny thing is, those same dudes actually discuss with me on how they shouldn't be struggling with low light shots (seeing that they are using the 5D3), but in fact, they still are having difficulty. When I outperform them on the 50D, they can't believe it.
Of course, as Loveshots has pointed out, some circumstances may have higher requirements which lower end bodies may not be able to cope with.
