Advice Needed on Nikkor AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8

Dear All,

Just wanted to ask opinion. I have purchase a Nikkor AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 G IF-ED DX lens to be use with D90 and read it somewhere in another forum that to unleashed the full potential of the lens, I should upgrade my body. Is this true?

I can spend a max of RM4k for the body and which body should I opt to? I have d300s and d7000 in my mind.

Your opinion in this matters is highly appreciated.

some even mentioned that D90 is like a proton and the nikorr lens is like merc..so it doesn't match it seems..

no such thing. D90 + 17-55mm f/2.8 are great. worry less your equipment. you already got the great setup. now, go shoot.

good glass = good IQ

camera body is just to record them. provided you get everything right (focus & exposure), it should be great...

The 17-55 f/2.8 came out in 2003, i think, when pixel count for dslr was still well under 10MP ... so perhaps those cameras back then didn't full realise the potential of the lens. The D90 is pretty modern compared to those cameras, 12.9MP, so don't worry too much, with good technique, you'll get great photos. I use the same lens with my D5100, no complaints ... even to copy some photos and documents, lol ... going to take the combination on an overseas trip next week ....

i used this lens with a D50 & D300...& it worked wonders!! tho i sold it when i got myself the D3s...only to regret selling it larrr
now go enjoy the lens & only upgrade the body when you feel it's limiting your creativity...

D300s compared to D90... to me it only gives you more AF points and faster AF-D AF speed
the AF points, dunno about your habits, but normally i only use one point so its not an upgrade,
the AF-D AF speed through the body motor, well the lens is AF-S so i think it doesnt affect it.
While D7000 you could maybe go higher ISO with less noise compared to D90... but the lens is already at f/2.8 VR... so again not really a major gain...
so I don't see a point there... but it boils down to your habits anyway...
the person who advised you could be a gear head while you are an enthusiast... so opinion might differ between you guys...

and the RM4k, well i probably would go on to buy a AF 80-200mm f/2.8D ED or AF-S 12-24mm f/4 or AF DC135mm f/2D or SB700/SB910 depending on your preference or go on weekend courses photography subject of your choice...

I used this 17-55 2.8 and it's a killer lens! For your D90 it's an ultimate combo.

RM4k topup a bit u can get 2nd Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR1 & its super duper nice combo..

if you can sell off your D90 with decent price, i don't see why not the intention of changing to D7K (body only)

i think ur setup is the ultimate already for dx. ur lens is basically DX king! and D90 is still a solid performer eventhough its discontinued. upgrading to a D7000 would be an slight increase in performance only.
if u really wanna upgrade then IMO only option left is to go FX

Get just what you need, nothing more, or you'll get distracted! You'll be forced to extract the best from it then, instead of wondering what you want to use. I had a 70-300, then a 18-200 ... sold them off after a short while when I realised I never used the longer end of the lens for my needs, and was not likely too! The 17-55 is stuck, as good as permanently, on my D5100 now ... if I need something fixed and faster, I swap it for the 35mm f/1.8, which is a small investment for an excellent piece of glass.

To give an analogy - I'm also a hobbyist musician, and for years, I was laden down with loads of gear. It was distracting, seldom got much composing done. Sold off everything at one point and stuck to one guitar - got an album out already!

Just my 20 sen worth ...

That's the best advice i've read so far on the upgrade fog blinding enthusiasts. I'm also caught in this. My pictures got better after I am forced to be 'stuck' with my kitlens and my 35mm ONLY. But now since some dude go and bring up this 17-55mm f/2.8 thingy... i feel itchy again! Cilaka betul!
