Re: Share your K30 experience here

I managed to play with one during a Pentax outing in Singapore. If you have used a recent Pentax DSLR, it's just so familiar. Just plug and play. Handling wise, it sits nicely between the K-r and K-5. Ergonomics is similar to K-r. Although its slightly bigger and heavier in specs, it doesn't feel so in practice,

What I noticed is the improvement of the pop-up flash mechanism, it's much dampened compared to my K-r. My K-r flash pops up like a cheap toy. The top of the prism is also more flat, unlike the bump the K-r has. Why I mentioned this is because the flash like Yongnuo 560 which I use just barely fit onto the hotshoe, it's bottom just a paper thin gap to the top of the prism.

Image quality wise, I'm not able to comment yet. For the looks, it's appearence is much more serious than the fun-looking K-r.

K-30's AF definitely shows improvement over the K-5. Focus lock is more determined.

Oh.. I didn't encounter that yet. Maybe my strap still new. Now that you mentioned it I think the C&N strap is wider and the fabric is softer.

By the way, it seems there's not so much excitement here over the K-30 like the K-5 and K-x/K-r had. I wonder what's the reason..

Perhaps Pentaxians are getting more and more low profile...smuggling and enjoy their gears all by themselves

My K-30 arrived a few days ago from Singapore, costing me a total of RM2055 which I think is very cheap despite a big hit on Paypal charges.

Coming from the already ancient K100D, this camera is simply superb in every way.

    - camera just feels solid, with high build quality to it
    - beautiful LCD screen
    - totally lag-free live-view
    - bright and clear OVF (my old pentamirror was miserable)
    - AF is fantastic, and will not hesitate to lock on (accurately) in the dark
    - this focus peaking feature is really a break-through for manual focusing (got me a SMC M 50/1.7)
    - high ISO noise is fantastically low, I will now not hesitate to shoot at 3200!
    - don't miss the top LCD display at all
    - have not tried taking video at all, although I heard that it is fantastic
    - there is just so much to learn

Probably the current Pentax cameras are too good to let go, hence little excitement. For me having a K-r, the only reason to upgrade to K-30 will be for the pentaprism and the interchangeable screen. The prospect of fixing a split focus screen there is nice, in my opinion. Not that the K-r's screen is not changable, but anyone who has done it will know it's really fiddly and unlike a pentaprism, the K-r pentamirror is hollow so dirt can fall in deep inside while the screen is out.

The K-30 looks pretty enough to attract attention. Maybe it's time for DSC to invest in some billboard advertising. I see giant Nikon ads everywhere I drive!

Pricey billboard advertising aside, here's a glowing review of the K-30

played with this for a time too...really amazing build for the price...very good improvements in af...

also been playing with a sony a57...so much technology for the price...but plastic fantastic...having some issue with the evf, both a65 and a77 evfs looks better...and the sony 16-50/2.8 is awesome...feels so much more so than the pentax version but having said that my memory is also getting old...

my heart really wants to get the k30...superior build and handling at the price point...but so far my brain has veto...
