It is one of their strategy for survival , it resemble the head. When the butterfly landed it shuffle its hind wings, attracting predators' attention to its tail instead of its head. Going by the numbers I encountered with missing tails and part of hind wing, I think the strategy works well.

Actually it is quite common in the coastal scrub land of west Malaysia.
Most people did not encounter or notice it , could be due to its small size and it is a high speed flyer.
