unknown butt

would appreciate an ID for this butt.
It's one of the most skittish butt I have come across. Unlike other butts whose wings would be upright and touching this butt's wings are always in the ready position of about 35 degrees apart.

I suppose this is a technique wherein you paint the subject with the speedlight and underexpose the rest of the scene. So, only the subject is correctly exposed and rest remains dark.

The background will be dark cos the sensor of the camera is unable to capture the light reflected with deeper DOF.
If you want the background to appear ….there are ways.

1)Open the aperture bigger i.e. from f/16 to f/8
but one is getting an image with a lesser DOF(Need to stack then.)
2)Position the subject fairly close to a leaf for example.
3)Increasing ISO but not too much otherwise no contrast to gather more light and obvious more noise.
4)Fill the background with NL or led light.With a reflector or assistance.This might spook the subject.
5)EV or exposure value can also be manipulated.

Hi Teokf,

The name is Malay Punchinello (Zemeros emesoides emesoides)

I believe you are using first curtain flash hence the backdrop is all dark .

As irenecal pointed out, open up your aperture, you do not need F/16 , especially if you can parallel the broadside of the butterfly as it will be a very "thin" object in that angle and F8-F/11 is plenty of DOF to contain the subject . I routinely use wider than F/8 for my shots.

If you want a lighter background use 2nd curtain flash ( Fill-flash) , this will allow ambient light to enter the sensor when the shutter's 1st curtain is opened , and just before the 2nd curtain of the shutter closes the flash will fire the appropriate amount of flash to illuminate the subject in front.

So, now I know how you get your "clean" images of the butterflies. Thanks for taking the time to give a clear explanation of your process of taking clean images. I believe many have already benefited after reading this thread.
