I believe you are using first curtain flash hence the backdrop is all dark .
As irenecal pointed out, open up your aperture, you do not need F/16 , especially if you can parallel the broadside of the butterfly as it will be a very "thin" object in that angle and F8-F/11 is plenty of DOF to contain the subject . I routinely use wider than F/8 for my shots.
If you want a lighter background use 2nd curtain flash ( Fill-flash) , this will allow ambient light to enter the sensor when the shutter's 1st curtain is opened , and just before the 2nd curtain of the shutter closes the flash will fire the appropriate amount of flash to illuminate the subject in front.
