D80 is very good at ISO 1600... i'm serious.

and then the noise start popping like a popcorn...

yup, compare to it's class, ISO 1600 can retain very good detail, i found it has a little advantage compare to D200.

exposure must be very cautious, if you expose it correctly, kit lens also can do it well. And nothing to do with the speed of the lens.

Saw you mentioned about the noise level at ISO800, mind to share a little?
Would like to see some test shots.

I was contemplating between the D80 and the D90 earlier before i got mine, but later decided on the D90 as i wasn't convinced that the CCD sensor would be able to handle ISO 800 without much noise.
I have another Alpha 350 which i'm experiencing quite bad noise conditions under ISO800. Once bitten twice shy...

i am using d80 also.. try some night shoot ,high iso 1600 too,
just take a look.

i am in daily use, so the noise level is ok for me..

is either push your aperture or ISO, as long as the metering is correct, picture at ISO 1600 is acceptable for D80, take a look on Rico's picture, it's nice and acceptable. I will try find some history shots, will publish once I found.
