Apart from the pics of the destruction, would like to share some pics taken on the same afternoon where we were shooting cow racing. Quite a number of us fell, got injured as the cows came charging towards us and we had to get out of the way....some of our cameras were also battle tested, either they dropped into the mud or we fell onto them on the ground or mud ....some were totally covered in mud and dust afterwards...
One of the PMers even dislocated his shoulder and had to be sent to the hospital, etc, etc...Yours truly fell when I was trying to get out of the way of the charging cows which came over the bunds and I landed on dry side of the field right on top of my 2 cameras...covering them both in mud and dust....bruising my rib cage..
Very exciting times and you can almost relate to the adrenalin rush of the Pamplona bull racing in the streets...

The welcoming reception dressed in their best to receive us...

These wooden harness are placed on the neck of the cow which irritates the hell out of them and makes them very agitated...

The site of the race...an empty but still water covered padi field

Sharing a few Pacu Jawi shots from the hundreds taken...

The rider holding onto one of the cow's tails to make him run... and showing off to the audience on his balancing act...the white cow is raging mad..look at his red eyes....the rider had just bitten his tail earlier...

    PacuJawi3.jpg

Don't be mistaken that cows can't run..ask the PMers who were there many of whom nearly got run over time after time..

    PacuJawi1.jpg

Liked this shot becoz of the hoofs in mid air..

This was one of the most enjoyable event, photography-wise for me. I took the 'daring' position right at the end of the 'sawah' where the bulls are supposed to exit and waited there, took my photos and then run like hell......

I have just processed one photo to share. I agree with macropixman....it was really exciting. The bulls were about 20m from where I was standing. After I took this photo I had to dodge the bulls.

You just look at the bulls thru the viewfinder with the camera set to AFC and high continuous drive mode, half press and when the bulls were some 100m away, look for the best opportunity and framing. As the bulls rushed towards you, it appeared bigger and bigger until it almost filled the viewfinder. then it is time to look into the eyes of the bulls and see which way they were coming and try to step aside.......sometimes they were just too near.

There's no protection! Either from the mud splash or from the bulls runnig over your gears or you for that matter!

2 photographers were run over by the bulls and suffered dislocated shoulders! That's what make photographing the event dangerous yet most exciting! It's like being in the bull pen shooting a rodeo event!

Being a 5 day shooting trip on foot mostly, tough to carry around the 300mm on top of other lenses/bodies. Of coz it would have been super if I brought it.
No protection for the gears; shoot, turn around to protect the lenses from mud splatter n hope the bulls/cows don't hit you. But it was really fun and exciting..

Another rider biting the tail to make the bull run faster

    PacuJawi15.jpg

This was the last shot before I would turn and run for cover. The foreground grass is where I am standing....this is the end part of the course..

    PacuJawi13.jpg

The owners giving their animals some TLC before handing them to the riders to run their guts out...

    PacuJawi24.jpg

This is one of the best riders that day

    PacuJawi23.jpg

The end of the day when the animals get washed down by their owners before being put up for the highest bidding...

That's all from me for the Pacu Jawi session..
