Cool Trip to Sabah? Ideas? Input?

I am working on collecting some information about the possibility of organising a trip for 30 or so photographers to Sabah for a period of 6-7 days. What do you think the itenary to be? Where should we go? Sempoerna? Sepilok? KK town?

This trip should present as much photography oppurtunities as possible for what is unique and photogenic in Sabah.

Any ideas? I haven't been to Sabah at all, so I really need help here.

Ohh... err... I think 2 things have to be ruled out... going up Mount KK itself as well as diving.... these are 'land-based' photographers we are talking about!

Steven

It depends what you are after. 6-7 days covering sabah is not enough. YOu need to breakdown what you are after. Let me help you.

1. city scape
2. Crafts
3. Mountain scape
4. Riverine
5. Lifestyle
6. Island
7. Nature
8. Wildlife

There is a few suggestion.

1. Mount Kinabalu of course
2. Wildlife of Kinabatangan River
3. Danum Valley Flora and Fauna, Insect
4. Kota Klias arts and crafts
5. Mabul Islands

Many many more. Streamline it down.

Hehehe.... cannot narrow it down much as the interests of these photographers will be varied, so the itenary should preferably include a bit of everything.

Culture/lifestyle, crafts, unique wildlife and/or landscapes. Preferably with a home-stay with some of the indigenious people but all these have to be suitable for 30 photographers carrying enough gear to scare away an elephant or two.

Re: Trip to Sabah? Ideas? Input?

Get in touch with Sabah based photographers like KwanFM, peter kan....etc. They will be able to provide some info. KwanFM, Peter Kan and Windermere should be able to provide some very fantastic photos of various sceneries like those in Tanjung Simpang Mengayau in Kudat, some tamu pic in various villages etc. I (based in KK) for 1 would love to lead and be lead in this trip. Let us know earlier so that we can arrange the transportation and accommodations. We'll need several 4WD to cater for the bazookas which those sifus would bring.

To be honest, 6 - 7 days is not enough. And don't forget to bring lots of storage for your pics.

Can we come out with the tentative date and duration for this trip? Since MATTA Fair is around the corner and i will try to gather some information from there.

Re: Trip to Sabah? Ideas? Input?

Sabah highlights for me have been many over the years, a sampling of what Sabah has to offer:

1. Kota Kinabalu streets and market, kampung air and surrounding villages
2. Kota Kinabalu islands - sand, surf and sand
3. Mount KK and the local markets along the road ie. Tambunan etc - native crafts and World Heritage site
4. Sepilok, Sukau (Kinabatangan) via Sandakan - orang utan, prosboscis monkey, other large mammals
5. Kota Belud Tamu - traditional crafts, buffaloes, rice wine and grilled fish
6. Danum Valley in Lahad Datu - birds to die for, frogs, snakes and tiger leeches
7. Kudat - tip of Borneo and home of interesting indigineous communities

Land route is an option but now we also have FAX flights which operates between Kota Kinabalu and the other smaller towns.

Hehehe... Desmond, as in the earliest post, I am doing 'information gathering' and research now... so I don't have a fixed date for it.

Naz nailed it. Personally I like Sapi Island, KK mountain, Kota Belud and KK town.
And the various national parks like Lambir, Sepilok etc is worth the visit.

Re: Trip to Sabah? Ideas? Input?

6-7 days is indeed too little. if you can squeeze more days, and better still include S'wak. Mulu Caves are to die for.

man, i miss West Malaysia.

Re: Trip to Sabah? Ideas? Input?

you can do a short trip but visit limited areas...lepas tu datang lagi la. i've been here 2+ years and i still havent been to many places. how many can spend 2-3 weeks to cover whole what sabah has to offer.

on another note..just came back from imbak canyon yesterday. since i am not fit i just carried my 300d with kit lens. half way battery out...sampai waterfall rasa macam nak terjun je dalam tu waterfall...abis tension x ada camera.

Re: Trip to Sabah? Ideas? Input?

I personally strong recommend Nagbani's suggestion. However, 6-7 day indeed very short.

As a Sabahan, i see 6-7 days is only enough to cover Mount KK, Tunku Abdul Rahman (TAR) Island, Kudat's Tip of Borneo with Rungus Longhouse & Kota Belud Tamu. The most skip Kudat trip direct to Kinabatangan River cruise/Sukau via Mount Kinabalu. The reason why Sukau just b'cos those Mat Salleh came along way from Europe just want to see 1 look of the Orang Belanda & why don't you guys?

Just my 2 cents.
