ASFON WP (short for Angkatan SeniFoto Wilayah Persekutuan) is going to held a joint photography exhibition with other local photography club in this coming few months. It will be held in the National Art Gallery, Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. This afternoon they held a meeting to determined what direction to take for the coming exhibit.

Now, what does it have anything to do about us PMers?

Future directions of PM.Com.

The recently held competition with Chip magazine is a good start for us PMers. It help get us noticed to the regular public. An photographic exhibition is another good starting point. The question is, now that i've been throwing ideas for an exhibition around, would Pmers just be a NATO (no action talk only) about the exhibits?

I'm talking about us organizing a PRINT exhibition of our own.

Can we do it? Or we just gonna rant and talk about it?

Come on, proof me wrong. Are we just gonna talk and talk about having our own exhibition, or are we gonna do sumthing about it?

yeah i think most of us have no real idea what exactly we have to do when it comes to doing an exhibition, tho i sure hope this gets put into action instead of talk only!

i did get offered to do a little exhibition at this hotel in kuching. still obtaining more info on my part, sounds interesting but i have no idea what i'm in for. doubt i'd sell anything, but it would be fun to get some exposure.

so cikgu ted, can u let us know what we're in for when it comes to exhibition-stuff-wise?

and, happy belated birthday too

OK, lets do it.

Ted can you put together a print competition Template (rules, timing, image size, subject matter, submission guidelines, judges, themes. etc) . Maybe you could "borrow" the template from the National Art Gallery and persuade them to host the exhibition of the top prints. Send the preliminary template to Maxby and me and any other PMer you think might be interested in helping to pull this thing off. We can then have a meeting at the new PM HQ in PJ (not in Sec 16 but at the Poolside in that Condo in front of Crystal Crown. Any volunteers out there interested in joining the PM Print Competition Committee? Please list your names down here. For the moment lets not restrict ourselves to a specific sponsor until we've discussed the issues. I'm away and out of the country in July and August, so someone (Ted?) will have to head this thing although I dont mind helping if I can be excused for July and August. Maybe if we have a specific theme we could interest some serious sponsorship. For example we could work with the National Heritage Trust to feature historically significant and/or endangered buildings. Or endangered species. Or Malaysian Wetlands. Or Endangered Animals. Or Poverty amidst Plenty. Or something on the environment. Or AIDS. etc. etc..

I vote for the poverty angle as well. Or historic buildings or even AIDS. Bah, I'll take anything as long as it looks good in B&W

Well I guess if I were to do an AIDS thing I would still need a specific angle to look at. Hmm...will let you know if I can think of an angle that no one else has done yet.

Haha thanks. I was worried of doing a cliche angle that would parade them like a freak show thus need to look for another angle (Like the homeless project). Guess the project inspired me in more way than one

I think we have two options:

1. Everybody agreed to have the exhibition under the name of PhotoMalaysia.com, this will definitely help promoting our community more and more people will notice the photographers and the community inside. If we can built up the reputation of PhotoMalaysia, we will be able to influence and give louder sound and feedback from sponsors in future. Definitely not in the first few projects though.

2. Use PhotoMalaysia.com as a resources of photographers/photographs, held a competition or gather good prints from members, exhibit the photos under the general name, eg. history of malaysia, beloved malaysia, truely malaysia, beggers of Malaysia...etc.

Upto the organising community to decide.

Ted, we already have a list of volunteers to help. If you/volunteers think through a preliminary flow of how we're gonna do this one you can propose a date for a meeting either at my place or your Starbucks office to get the ball rolling.

Some blanks to fill/discuss/decide:-

Strategic Objectives of the exhibition- what are we tring to achieve
Themes
Timing - when
Rules & format
Process - where to submit prints, handling of prints, where/who to keep, custodian
Judging & Judges - who/how
Sponsor or Partner (Chip, National Gallery, Private Gallery, NGO, Govt, Companies)
Place - where to exhibit
Etc.
