Good news Canon 5D is now below RM7,700 in KL

Good news. Brand new Canon 5D can now be bought in KL at RM7,700 or below. Availability is plentifull. Nikon D3 is expected to cost about twice as much and only available around Dec 07. High iso noise performance of the D3 is expected to be about 1.5 to 2 stops better than 5D. However, other than the new D3 and 1DMk2, no other dslr can beat 5D's high iso noise performance at the moment. At low iso, the performance of 5D is already hard to beat. Looks like Canon is again one step ahead of Nikon in terms of making FF dslr more affordable and thus more popular. Good time for prosumers to go for FF dslr technology by adopting Canon and have the option of upgrading to more advance technology offered by Canon pro dslrs later on. Second hand Nikon lenses are still fetching good prices to make it feasible to cross over to Canon. So far still no news of any reaction from Nikon to counter 5D which was introduced in 2005 at about RM12,000. If Nikon continues to delay its answers to 5D, very soon a large majority of prosumers who wanted FF would have already crossed over to Canon with the prices Canon is now offering.

Fair comment! Nikon has FF camera in the D3 but it's way too expensive for the normal hobbyist. I'm sure they will keep a close watch on the FF market and will do a watered down but affordable model if and when they need to.

A nice second hand unit with shutter count under 10K inclusive of battery pack was available at Foto Flash KLCC for under RM6k, if you are interested.

....and the good news is, the new model, whether by Canon or Nikon, competition will dictate that it is unlikely to be introduced at RM12k anymore. And Nikon better be quick, otherwise Canon would have already captured the lion share of the market. Canon global marketing is just being realistic - it is time to change the pricing strategy because time/ff cost has changed while Nikon is still working on it.

The competitive new Nikon model will have to be placed somewhere between the D3 and D300. The following are the likely D3 features that Nikon can cripple to mass produce the "D300FX" at a lower offer price targetted at the mass prosumer market.

1. Lowers maximum shooting speed.
2. D300 type body. Needs seperate battery grip.
3. No in camera crop mode.
4. Single flash storage card.
5. Pop-up flash (just to beat the competition since 5D does not have one while the prosumers love it).
6. Sensor with ultra sonic dust remover (due to its availability since the D3 launch).

Meanwhile the new Canon model will likely have the following new features:

1. Improved high iso low noise performance.
2. Live view.
3. Phase contrast focus during live view (like Nikon's)
4. Additional software features such as auto iso, HD TV view, etc.
5. Pop up flash.
6. Sensor with ultra sonic dust cleaning.
7. High speed flash storage card capable.

And finally looks like Sony will also join the duo since there is volume and of course money in the ff prosumer market. The body of its recently lauched dslr is already so much larger (physical size wise) than its predecessor. Looks like it is FF ready.

The message is Canon is getting the old 5D pricing ready for the introduction of the new 5D. Canon is trying to care of those who just bought the old 5D when it introduces the new 5D. The old 5D must be cheaper than the new lower priced 5D in order to be fair to those who just bought the old 5D. Thanks to Canon for being so responsible and considerate.

The next message is, Nikon better be fast or otherwise the lion share of the market would have been taken by Canon by the time it tries to pace it versus the D3. Prosumers only change their cameras once every few years.

Canon 5D replacement, possibly Canon 7D is rumored to be around US$1899 (RM6800). So guys...don't rush and buy the 5D...wait for 7D!
