Re: Lens Gathering
There are a few long lenses lenses that I would have loved to really try but couldn't cause, well, nothing much you can do with a 400mm (1st pic) and 500mm mirror lens (2nd pic) inside A&W with poor lighting condition.
Maybe next time we can do this again but during the day? And I'll sure haul my old *** aluminium tripod this time ![]() This is Iskandar's 400mm grandfather lens. ![]() Dunno who's mirror lens is this one. For the life of me, I just couldn't get enough light to be able to see the doughnut effect it supposed to produce on the background.. ![]() |

Re: Lens Gathering
Hello,
Fantastic gathering guys and gals last night. Never have I seen so many Pentax lenses, flashes and bodies all at one place. Hoya Pentax must realise how important Malaysia (and Singapore is) and there exists a hotbed of loyal Pentax users here. fongsaunder, really likes the way you capture the shots that link the camera with the photographer. Chess's lovely kid with the K10D and hiding behind the ballon are winners. Had a serious problem with adewhite's k10d and the metz flash not firing. You captured the seriousness of the moment. Love it. jesster, your silver lens (the Helios 85mm/f1.5) is a true gem. the photos taken were indicative of it and it was the contribution from everyone too. adewhite, nice shot of the group with the peleng 8mm, i believe. and thanks for the lovely shot of the metz macro flash on k10d in action. that long 400mm and you holding it - classic. my pick for the night: 1) iskandar's collection of lenses and flash 2) autobot's sci-fi print (combo of take huat's digital art skill and wesley's printing skill par excellence) 3) jesster's silver lens and just for the record, these are some of the current lenses that I recall were available for test: DA17-70mm, DA*50-135mm, Tamron 500mm mirror lens, DA35mm f2, DA*16-50mm, DA40mm Limited, FA35-80mm, FA43 Limited, FA31 Limited, FA77 Limited, DA70mm Limited, Tamron 90mm SP (Di and non-Di version), Tamron 18-250mm, Raynox DCR250, DA14mm, DFA100mm macro, Zenitar 16mm, Peleng 8mm, some Sigma lenses and more. Anyone care to add to the list of lenses id shown last night esp. the oldie lenses, please do so. Body wise, we had a *istDS, a K100D/s, many K10Ds, 1 K20D and 1 film SLR. Flash-wise, there were 1 Sigma EF530, 1 Sigma EF500 ST, 1 Metz 54?, 1 Metz macro flash and of course the AF60FGZs and AF540FGZs. We must not forget the A&W restaurant for letting us have the nice corner which drew attention from restaurant diners too. There are much more lenses to see. Hopefully, the next lens gathering will produce other lenses like: 1. The rest of the DA limited like DA15mm and DA21mm 2. At least one classic FA* lens 3. The Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 4. More exotic Russian and German lenses on K-mount 5. The DA*200mm and DA*300mm f4 6. The DA*60-250mm and more.. Unbelievable experience. And I wonder if we could get autobot to do a demo of the use of the Wacom tablet with Macbook on digital art and photo editting too. Cannot remember all who came but here are those I can recall: kareem, xajax07, iskandar taib, fongky, fongsaunder, akuchess, autobot, kamayok3, amytky, adewhite, patrick fan, zgriffin, macrider, jesster, desmond, mrzaim and a few others. Anyway, here is my contributions of pics from last night: # 1 - the corner that we hijacked at a&w IMGP7077_pp.jpg # 2 - iskandar's collection IMGP7091_small.jpg # 3 - definitely a point being made here IMGP7094_small.jpg # 4 - reminds me of some gangster movie, you pull out a gun, get 3 guns pointed back at you IMGP7096_small.jpg # 5 - well, it wasn't all pentax IMGP7101_small.jpg # 6 - fong snr left all the shooting to jnr last night IMGP7130_small.jpg # 7 - some serious discussion between autobot and akuchess IMGP7132_small.jpg # 8 - figuring out jesster's infamous silver lens IMGP7095_small.jpg # 9 - hi patrick IMGP7131_small.jpg # 10 - coolest guy that night gotta be fongsaunder - great photos and style IMGP7097_small.jpg The TT finally wind down close to 1am. Next TT? Well, maybe we should invite some of our Penang langs to come down. And also, yobboy must be there, this time. Last edited by hchan : 20-04-2009 at 07:24 PM. |

Re: Lens Gathering
We all know that the compatibility with old lenses is one of the main strengths of Pentax, but the gathering really drove this point home for me. I was walking around with a very modern DSLR i.e. my K10D body only hanging on my neck trying all kinds of lenses all the way back from the 70's, and even modified bastardised ones...
![]() Real cool and poisonous experience I tell you... My focusing eye got really fried looking through all these lenses. Since akuchess and hchan have stated their pick, these are mine - the K-Mart aka Carrefour lenses from Iskandar - a Gemini and an Albinar. Still very usable despite being so cheap even back then. ![]() |

Re: Lens Gathering
Here's some of the photos.
The stuff I brought: Other than the lens and camera in the back, that is. From memory: A cheap 400mm T-mount lens (needs repair) Tamron 28-85 Adaptall 2 lens (sticky diaphragm) Vivitar Series One 70-210 f3.5 (pics turn purple) Takumar 135 f2.5 (I shot most of the pics here with this lens) Vivitar 19mm f4 Super Wide (on a 35mm, that is.. on a APS-C it's more mundane) SMC Pentax 45-125 f4 push-pull zoom (bizarre, didn't even remember buying this one - you pull to zoom IN - how intuitive!) Super Albinar 28 f2.8 Gemini 28 f2.8 (my old workhorse lens - the filter's all scratched up) SMC Pentax M 50 1.4 (hiding in the drink holder) Osawa 24mm f2.8 Vivitar 283 flashgun (I was dissapointed when told I'd burn out my K200D if I tried it on there..) Ricoh XR-M body (this was Ricoh's "kitchen sink" camera - "everything also got") In other words, a bunch of manual focus junk! Next time we do this I'll have to remember to bring a bunch of small stickers so we can label our own lens caps - the rear ones, especially, were hard to keep track of. If anyone's missing a Tamron Adaptall 2 rear cap, let me know, I've got it with me. When in the dark, focus on the rambut: Big Bertha. One of the two mirror lenses I saw. Assembling "Da Bomb". A 1000mm mirror lens! Shooting Da Bomb. I think I took this one with the 45-125 zoom. Trying out the macro: The whole ring thing rotates when the camera focuses. Weird. And the pièce de résistance - Jesster's Russian telephoto. Forgotten the details, but it was something like a 75 or 80mm f1.7 or 1.8. 39mm (Leica) screwmount, with a 39-42mm adapter, then a 42mm-PK adapter. Funny how in the 1970s you had to pay EXTRA to get camera bodies in black (these days they're all black - plastic). Jesster collects unique, valuable rare stuff like this, I collect cheap junk... Maybe I'll post a few more on Monday. Tomorrow I'm taking the 135 f2.5 to One Utama to take photos of Korean performers on stage. They were singing "Arirang" this morning, when I went to go watch a movie. Iskandar Last edited by Iskandar Taib : 19-04-2009 at 12:47 AM. |
