Sharp at all aperture, fast focusing. Bokeh is great but cannot compare to 85 1.4. A lens that I use more than the rest even if it means I have to take ten steps back. And VR does work, just don't rely on it too much.
Thought it tends to be more sensitive to flare and ghosting. And you'll grow a few more muscles.
I advice is forget the equivalents, save up your money untill you can afford this.

Before you buy this lens, you literally need to build up your pecs and biceps first. I've seen a few photogs mount the 70-200 on a tripod, which for me is a real shame. It's a great focal length to be mobile with and because it does produce great quality images, you'll be more than satisfied with your pictures.
Hand holding it will take some use to especially when you shoot portraits from the waist up at near 200mm. It focuses fast, and though it's sharp at f2.8, I personally think it gets a little sharper at f5.6. This lens does get a bit of flare but this is very easily compensated by changing your shooting position if you can, or just using the hood if the option to change position is not available. I rarely bring the hood just because it sits bulky in the bag and I normally shoot early in the morning or late evenings anyway.
For me, a 70-200 and a fast wide angle lens complete the focal range I need for almost all my shooting projects. Anything longer than this focal length, than you're probably starting to specialize- sports,nature.
There are quite a few in the buy/sell forum posting at reasonable prices. I have no idea why the 70-200 are being sold after less than a year of use. But its a very good lens that can take a lot of abuse and will last for a very long time. So grab a 2nd hand before its all gone.

I use this lens often. I bought the 80-200 before I got this because I didnt think I needed the VR but I was wrong. Panning shots have never been easier. I can shoot at 200mm with speeds around 1/60sec and still get sharp panning shots. I also use it for weddings. So i really recommend this lens. As been said above, save up and grab this lens either brand new or 2nd hand.

There's only one reason made me choosing this lens over the already superb 80-200 AF-D: VR. Combine the VR with good handholding technique, U will get many many 'keepers' that otherwise would be impossible when u shoot 2.8 telezoom w/out VR at medium/slow shutter speed. Don't believe 100% to those who say VR don't work when subject moves. It will work, ( as long it moves in one or predictable direction like car/bike racing, birds flying, models during catwalk) & the trick is u have to select the right shutter speed (medium/fast), that suits the subject movement. Of course if u take photos of kids running in dim condition at 1/20 shutter speed with VR, it wont work!. Heck even VR with 10 stops compensation wouldn't make the kids sharp.
And VR indeed is useful in certain kind of sports which involves panning such as F1, cycling, LIMA show, GP racing etc. Just give it a try, & after that u wouldn't want any other telezoom in the same range...

This lens is very solid, really feel like a pro lens when holding it. A bit heavy first but once you get used to it, you'll start enjoying taking picture with it as you get more keepers than before. Focussing is fast and easy to track animal or racing car. VR allow me to take a picture at lower shutter speed. I managed to take a picture at 1/90 to 1/60 and still get good pictures. Bokeh is creamy. You can even use this lens for portrait.
