Pros: Sharp, crispy, nice color and contrast,, well controlled flare and fringing and vignetting
Cons: no USM, hunt a little bit when focusing, for APS-C only

I bought this lens to replace my canon kitlens. It give me satisfaction until now. Nothing to say, its just superb, even sharper than Canon EF 17-40 F4L USM. nice color and contrast.

but, every human's creation have the downside of it. It doesn't have usm, so focusing is a little bit noisier and slower compared to the Canon USM lenses. It also hunt a little bit when focusing. this lens also easily collect dust from the extended barrel when you zoom out, so be careful. Somemore, this lens doesn't look professional like the L lenses and doesn't have focusing window.

The picture quality is superb, but the built and look can be improve.

Cheers!

Pros: F/2.8 throughout
Cons: Cannot be used on FF, Built quality could be better

The Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] has a very long name, and has a very long line of goodness packed into it. Firstly, Priced at around RM 1,350, the Tamron acts as an excellent and much cheaper alternative to the Nikkor 17-55mm. Performance wise, AF speed and noise is acceptable. Very very nice contrast. But it does tend to have occasional (but rare) problem with AF in low light situations. This isn't exactly a problem for Nikon users as Nikon bodies come with an AF-Assist Lamp. Otherwise, a speedlight with AF-Assist Lamp would do the trick. For less than RM 1.5k you get an ultrawide to standard zoom lens with F/2.8 throughout the entire range.

Although, the built quality seems somewhat 'plastic' and it doesn't exactly feel solid. Focus distance display is absent on this lens. Although, it is very likely that if you are getting this lens, you wouldn't be a person who uses it anyway.

Overall, for the price you pay this is a lens with excellent picture quality. You get soft images at F/2.8 for certain occasions but once stopped down to F/5.6 or F/8, sharpness improves drastically.

If you do alot of indoor photography or you're looking for something to replace your kit lens, this could be you thing

Pros: Virtually no fringing, sharp, f2.8, fast focus, good build quality
Cons: Noisy motors (but still acceptable in most use), some distortion at widest angle

I have use this lens for nearly 10 months now after buying it for about RM1400 after considering the slightly cheaper Nikkor 18-70mm and Sigma 17-70mm for my Nikon D70s.
I use it mainly for travel and indoor shots without flash.
Build quality is a bit better than both the Nikkor and Sigma.
The lens is sharp but still not as sharp and contrasty as the Nikkor 50 f1.8.
But the most I'm impressed with is that there are no purple fringing on this lens.
I recommend this lens as a better alternative to the camera kit lens for serious amateur/hobbyist.

Pros: Sharp and clear, good value
Cons: Noisy, More Yellowish Colour at green plants

This is a recommended lens, I have it for 6 months now and the picture quality is excellent comparing it against same range of lens even some L series. It is a star buy.
The only problem that I am unhappy is when shooting at natural green plants, the end result is more yellowish than the actual green. The motor noise is a little noisy which may be annoying if shooting a silent speech events.

Pros: full range at f/2.8, fast focusing in low light condition, solid feel, sharp pictures (compared to kitlens)
Cons: loud 'snap' sound, occasional hunting and out of focus shots, very tight zoom ring, not very flexible as a macro lens

I used this lens since last Apr'08, as an upgrade for the Sony A350 18-70mm kitlens. The first thing is that, at 50mmm, it's a little short of range. But, thats no biggie. You get what you pay for.

Under low light condition, this lens is good. It takes snappy pics at f/2.8 with low ISO range. The sharpness is wayy better than the kitlens, but close-up shots (close to macro) are not particularly excellent. To me, it's just OK.

I'd recommend this lens as an indoor low-light condition lens; great for parties, gatherings and conditions where you don't need zoom capability. As a wide-angle lens, this lens is also recommended. But, as a walk-around or travelling lens, you definitely need more range than 50mm.

Pros: nice photos, sharp
Cons: transformer sound on auto focus....does not matter

I like this lens cos its sharp, fast, suit my taste.....even the focusing sound like it will transform like Transformer, but I like the sound too. Consider it Tamformer. Like it so much & recommeded
If the focus ring built in the lens...thats much better cos you wont easy touch the focusing ring when holding the lens body while the lens focusing...
