Nikon Announces 180-400mm F4E TC1.4 FL ED VR lens with built-in teleconverter

NIKON ANNOUNCES NEW AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm F/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR SUPER TELEPHOTO ZOOM LENS AT CES 2018

LAS VEGAS — CES BOOTH #14018 (January 8, 2018) – Today at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Nikon Inc. announced the new AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR super-telephoto zoom lens, which is ideally suited for photographing sports and wildlife with astounding speed and clarity. This professional level FX-format lens is more versatile than ever, and has been updated with the newest NIKKOR lens technologies including Nikon’s first ever built-in teleconverter and an advanced optical formula to enhance performance and minimize weight.

“This lens is a great example of how Nikon continues to push the boundaries of innovation and what’s possible with pro-level optics and high-end imaging equipment,” said Kosuke Kawaura, Director of Marketing and Planning, Nikon Inc.

Popular Pro-Level Lens Gets Even More Versatile

This new NIKKOR lens is a professional super-telephoto zoom lens, which is even more versatile with an extended wide range of 180-400mm, and a constant f/4 aperture to easily isolate a subject from the sidelines, even in challenging light. This is also the first NIKKOR lens to include a built-in 1.4X teleconverter, allowing photographers to seamlessly swap to a 252-560mm1 (FX-format) focal range. The teleconverter is engaged at the flick of a switch, and is easily operated with a single finger while looking through the viewfinder. When used on the Nikon D500 and other DX-format DSLRs, the focal length is the equivalent of 270-600mm (378-840mm with teleconverter engaged).

Whether capturing fast-moving winter sports on the slopes or elusive wildlife at a distance, photographers can shoot with confidence from this high performance NIKKOR lens. The new 180-400mm f/4 is optimized for high-speed capture, and features an electromagnetic diaphragm, helping to create smooth and consistent exposures while shooting high-speed bursts of images. What’s more, the AF tracking algorithm controlling the motor drive has been enhanced to increase tracking performance of fast moving subjects. When using cameras equipped with Nikon’s advanced 153-point AF system (D5, D500, D850), the outer row of AF points are activated as cross-type sensors to significantly enhance the AF coverage throughout the frame.2

Enhanced Performance with the Addition of New Technology

The lens now uses a fluorite element, which contributes to improved balance while minimizing weight. To further enhance handling and agility, the lens has adopted a new ball-bearing tripod collar ring to create a seamless transition from shooting horizontal to vertical composition. The VR mechanism offers a normal and sports mode, with up to four stops3 of compensation to help create sharp images, even when handheld.

The lens construction includes the use of durable magnesium alloy for weight reduction, while the lens is also sealed against dust and moisture. A fluorine coating is also used to help repel water droplets and dirt.

The optical formula of the lens uses eight Extra Low Dispersion (ED) elements, doubling the amount of ED elements used by its predecessor, the NIKKOR 200-400mm. These help to provide extremely sharp and detailed images and 4K UHD / 1080p video, and is ideally mated to high resolution Nikon DSLR cameras. Nikon’s exclusive Nano Crystal Coat is used to effectively suppress instances of ghosting and flare.

Price and Availability

The AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR lens will be available in March 2018 for a suggested retail price of $12,399.954. For more information on this NIKKOR lens and other Nikon products, please visit www.nikonusa.com.

1. When the built-in or an external teleconverter is used, the focal length may not be displayed correctly in shooting information / Image data.
2. This feature will be available with a firmware upgrade for the D5, D850 and D500 as of March 2018
3. Based on CIPA Standard. This value is achieved when FX-format compatible lenses are attached to a FX-format digital SLR camera and zoom lenses are set at the maximum telephoto position.

HASSELBLAD Announces Winners of Masters Awards 2018 – Nabil Rosman from Malaysia, won Project//21

HASSELBLAD ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF MASTERS AWARDS 2018

Hasselblad Masters is widely acclaimed as one of the world’s most prestigious professional photography competitions. The winners are chosen through a combination of a public vote and a professional Masters Jury – comprised internationally renowned photographers and imaging experts.

Every Hasselblad Masters award winner will hold the title of ‘Hasselblad Master’ and be a brand ambassador for two years. In addition, they will receive a brand new Hasselblad medium format camera and be invited to shoot for a collaborative project with Hasselblad. This project will be printed and released in the bi-annual Hasselblad Masters book.

Winners will receive their awards, medium format cameras, and trophies at a special Photokina 2018 ceremony in Cologne, Germany this September.

Bronius Rudnickas, Hasselblad Marketing Manager: “Over 30 000 images were submitted to this year’s competition and that was a record, we are glad to see the competition is growing every year.”

Masters Jury member and professional photographer Tom Oldham said: “It really struck me how progressive many of the entries were this year and how far the entrants were willing to push the brief. These were the photographers who caught my eye – the ballsy, out-there risk-takers who make compelling pictures that refuse to be ignored. I’m proud to have helped to get this great kit into their hands – their images deserve it.”

The Hasselblad Masters Awards 2018 winners are:
Aerial – Jorge de la Torriente – Miami, USA
Architecture – Kamilla Hanapova – St. Petersburg, Russia
Art – Maria Svarbova – Bratislava, Slovakia
Beauty & Fashion – Michal Baran – Trim, Ireland

Sony Announced E-mount 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS lens for APS-C bodies

Sony Adds High Magnification, High Quality 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 APS-C Zoom Lens to E-mount Lens Lineup

New Compact, Lightweight E 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS Features Outstanding Sharpness and Fast, Precise, Quiet AF for a wide variety of still and video applications

SAN DIEGO, Jan 4, 2018 – Sony Electronics, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, has today announced its 48th E-mount lens. This new APS-C lens features a versatile 18-135mm focal length, aperture range of F3.5-F5.6 and Optical SteadyShot™ stabilization.

The new lens (model SEL18135) features a compact, lightweight design measuring only 2.75 x 3.5 inches and weighing in at a mere 11.5 oz, as well as a high magnification 7.5x optical zoom that covers the wide-ranging focal length of 18-135mm on APS-C or 27-202.5mm in 35mm equivalent focal length. The lens is an ideal fit for Sony’s popular APS-C sensor cameras including α6500, α6300 and α6000, and is an extremely useful tool for a wide range of shooting situations ranging from daily life to portraiture, landscape, nature and travel photography.

The E 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS produces outstanding corner-to-corner sharpness throughout the entire zoom range thanks to its advanced design featuring one aspherical lens and two extra-low dispersion glass elements that minimize aberrations. This lens also allows photographers to produce close-up images with pleasing ‘bokeh’ or background defocus as a result of its maximum magnification ratio of 0.29x and minimum focus distance of 1.48ft. It also offers built-in optical image stabilization to support handheld shooting.

Additionally, the 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS Zoom Lens offers fast, precise, quiet AF performance thanks to a linear motor, making it a perfect complement to the high-speed shooting and impressive video capabilities of many of Sony’s mirrorless cameras.

Pricing and Availability

The new E 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS APS-C Zoom Lens will ship next month and will be sold for about $600 US and $780 CA.

Report: GoPro has laid off 200-300 more staff from its drone division

Californian action camera manufacturer GoPro has laid off between 200 and 300 staff, according to a report by TechCrunch. The report claims the redundancies have been made in the division of the company that builds it aerial offering—the Karma drone—and that GoPro cited a need to “better align our resources with business requirements” as the reason for the layoffs.

GoPro has suffered in recent times, with its share price taking a hammering and profits showing in negative figures. One of the main reasons for this was the much-anticipated Karma drone, which had to be recalled after it was discovered the battery could shake itself loose, causing the device to lose power mid-flight and plummet back to Earth.

The company claims that, since returning to stores, Karma has been the number 2 best-selling drone priced above $1,000 in the US for a period of six months up to September 2017. Even so, it would have faced (and still does) stiff competition from former partner DJI.

GoPro’s November report to shareholders announced increased revenue of $300 million, up 37% on the same quarter last year, and a gross margin of 40%. The company was in profit too, making $15 million against a loss of $104 million in the third quarter of 2016. However, the share price has remained low, with current trading at $7.51 against a high of $90 in October 2014.

After 370 job cuts in 2016 and early 2017 the company stated that it employed 1,327 people, but that number is now set to drop to close to 1,000, according to the TechCrunch report.

GoPro, which has been operating under the name since 2004, hasn’t commented on the claims, but the job losses have come between the end of the financial year (December 31st) and the company’s annual report, which would seem the logical time to do it.

YongNuo Announced 14mm F/2.8 Autofocus Lens in Canon Mount

Yongnuo has made a name for itself as the go-to brand for cheap photo gear, and that includes several Canon lens alternatives (some of which seem like outright clones) that sacrifice some quality while slashing 60-80% or even more off the price. So far, Yongnuo has released its own versions of Canon’s 50mm F1.8, 35mm F2, 85mm F1.8, and 100mm F2. And today, they add one more to the list.

Meet the Yongnuo YN 14mm F2.8: a lens that looks very similar to Canon’s own 14mm F2.8L II. Here they are side by side:

According to Yongnuo’s description, the YN 14mm F2.8 sports 12 lens elements in 9 groups (Canon’s has 14 elements in 11 groups) and a 7-blade aperture (Canon’s has 6 blades). The other big difference is the focus motor. The Canon 14mm F2.8L II USM has an ultrasonic motor, while Yongnuo’s 14mm sports a standard DC motor; expect a much louder experience if you’re going to try out this lens.

The minimum focusing distance (0.2 meters), aperture range (F2.8-F22), magnification (0.15x), and angle of view (114°) are all identical.

Finally, the Yongnuo 14mm F2.8 will feature the same USB connection as the company’s 100mm F2, allowing for firmware updates that could help sand down the lens’ rougher edges after it makes its way into consumer hands.

For now, we don’t know when the Yongnuo YN 14mm F2.8 will officially arrive at online retailers, but we’ll keep an eye out for you.

As for cost, the Canon 14mm F2.8L II retails for $2,100. And while we don’t yet know exactly how much Yongnuo plans to charge for the YN 14mm F2.8, you can bet it’ll cost a whole lot less than two grand. To give you a frame of reference, Canon’s 100mm F2 USM lens goes for $500; the Yongnuo knock-off is just 160 bucks.

DPreview 2017 Buying Guide: Best cameras for students

Dpreview has recently published their DPreview 2017 Buying Guide: Best cameras for students

If you’re looking to learn more about photography there are some great cameras available. We’ve chosen a handful of models that offer an affordable way into photography, but give you plenty of scope to grow as you develop your skills. We’ve highlighted the two whose level of control and range of available lenses mean you won’t find yourself held back as your photography develops.

Our pick: Nikon D5600

There’s a lot to say for buying into a well-established system if you’re going to be taking your camera to classes or workshops. Nikon is, of course, one of those systems, and we think that the mid-range D5600 will fit a student photographer just right.

The D5600’s 24MP sensor is capable of great-looking JPEGs and excellent Raw image quality in terms of both dynamic range and low light performance. It’s a fairly compact camera, but controls don’t feel fiddly. Autofocus performance for viewfinder shooting is at the top of the class —live view AF is better with AF-P lenses, but generally lags behind Canon’s Dual Pixel system.

Simply put, it’s a highly capable camera that will continue to deliver good results for many years to come.

Also recommended: Fujifilm X-T20

Fujifilm’s X-series cameras are gaining plenty of recognition among photographers, and we think the Fujifilm X-T20 is well worth your consideration.

It offers Fuji’s 24MP X-Trans sensor and all of the wonderful film-like JPEG processing modes that come with it. It uses a version of the X-T2’s very good AF system, offers a high-quality built-in electronic viewfinder and provides decent 4K video capture. Fujifilm offers a fine selection of lenses, so while you might not be borrowing them from Canon and Nikon-toting peers, it’s a good system to grow into when you’re able to purchase more glass.

Oh, and that vintage DSLR-styling is easy on the eyes too.

We considered all of the cameras below when picking our winner, and even though we think the the D5600 is the best all-rounder, the other products on our shortlist are all worthy contenders.

If you’re not convinced by our pick, take a look at the following cameras and read on for a detailed breakdown of their strengths and weaknesses.

Lightroom 6.14 Final Update Adds Sony a7R III & FE 24-105 F4 G Support

Lightroom 6.14 Final Update Adds Sony a7R III & FE 24-105 F4 G Support

If the release of Lightroom Classic CC and Lightroom CC on October 18th was the beginning of the end for standalone Lightroom, today marks the end of the end. Adobe has released the final standalone Lightroom, version 6.14, adding some bug fixes and camera and lens compatibility, but otherwise using the opportunity to encourage users to jump on the subscription bandwagon.

To their credit, Adobe isn’t hiding this fact. They announced that this final update was coming all the way back in October, and today’s update announcement notes state the facts plainly:

Lightroom 6.14 is the last perpetual, standalone version of Lightroom.

While you may continue to purchase and use Lightroom 6 with a perpetual license, Adobe will no longer provide updates to the software. Consider upgrading to the Creative Cloud Photography plan to get the latest updates in Lightroom Classic CC and the all-new Lightroom CC, and ensure that the software works with raw files from the newest cameras.

As of today, Lightroom 6 becomes an ‘unsupported product.’

Of course, that’s okay if you plan to use it with a camera you currently own and don’t intend to upgrade any time soon. Problems—or, rather, inconveniences—arise with your next camera purchase. That camera won’t be supported by Lightroom 6, and you’ll be forced to use Adobe’s DNG converter before importing your images.

Not to mention the OS compatibility issues that will inevitably arise as Microsoft and Apple continue releasing new operating systems.

If that all sounds like too much of a hassle, and a Creative Cloud subscription is simply out of the question, it might be time to check out some of the popular alternatives that we’ve been testing and writing about recently.

Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSMArt lens – an astrophotographer’s dream lens

More than once, we’ve called the Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM | Art lens an astrophotographer’s dream lens. From the moment it was announced, we were dying to get our hands on it; and once we did, it did not disappoint.

But what’s the big deal? Why pay US$1,600 for this lens when the very capable Samyang/Rokinon 14mm F2.4 will cost you half as much and resolve nearly as much detail (if not more)?

Light… that’s why. A point explained beautifully by photographer Alyn Wallace, who recently took the 14mm F1.8 Art out for a spin in the night. After managing to take a hand-held photograph of the Milky Way—an insane and somewhat-pointless but also kind-of-fun experiment to see what F1.8 can really do—he pops the lens onto a tripod for some proper astrophotography and is immediately blown away.

“This lens is a light vacuum,” he says. “It’s like I’ve stuck a black hole on the front of my camera.”

CamFi introduces CCamFi Pro, fastest photo transfer

CamFi will launch the fastest wireless camera controller in the world

GUANGDONG , China – November 30, 2017 – CamFi, maker of wireless controllers for digital cameras, today announced the launch of a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for the fastest wireless camera controller, CamFi Pro. CamFi Pro uses the 802.11ac protocol to transfer the photo from the camera. It can offer Wi-Fi transfer speeds up to 866Mbps. Tests show it can reach speeds of 10M bytes per second in reality, two to three times faster than most built-in Wi-Fi cameras and 2.4G Hz wireless camera controllers.

CamFi Pro supports most of Canon, Nikon and Sony cameras. And it will be the only 5.8G wireless tether solution for Sony cameras in current market.

“Speed is a big problem for current Wi-Fi products. It limits the productivity of the professional photographers.” Said Mark Ma, CEO of CamFi. “CamFi Pro is going to use new technology to solve this challenge.”

CamFi Pro takes two to three seconds to transfer a raw photo with a size of 20 megabytes. It supports auto view mode, which enables the client device to receive the photos in real time when the photographer is taking the photo. Selective transfer is also supported. The photographer can send only JPEGs to the client device and keep the raw photos on SD card.

By using 5.8G band, the device effectively avoids Wi-Fi interference. This is suitable for professional photographers covering events and meetings. The live view works smoothly for high transfer speed, making it effective for recording the video as well.

CamFi Pro also supports timelapse, HDR, focus stacking and multiple camera control. The photographer can use one computer to control multiple cameras to shoot and transfer the photos back. It can be applied for bullet – time effect and 3D modelling.

It can be controlled from Android and iOS mobile devices as well as PCs and Apple computers. Backers of CamFi Pro will be the first to receive the product. Delivery is expected for February, 2018. More information, including a full list of compatible cameras, can be found on the Indiegogo crowdfunding site: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/camfi-pro-the-fastest-wireless-camera-controller#/
