Canon Announced EOS 6D Mark II DSLR Camera

MELVILLE, N.Y., June 29, 2017 – In celebration of the innovation behind today’s generation of high-quality digital SLR cameras on National Camera Day, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is excited to announce the new EOS 6D Mark II and EOS Rebel SL2 DSLR cameras designed for advanced-amateur and entry-level photographers, respectively. The EOS 6D Mark II camera is ideal for budding photographers looking to take their creative DSLR photography skills to the next level by shooting with a Full-frame CMOS sensor DSLR camera to capture beautiful high-quality portraits and striking landscapes, even in low-light situations. The EOS Rebel SL2 is a small, light, and compact camera with high-performance capability that allows users to get creative when capturing their special family moments or travel experiences.

“It seems fitting that today, a day set aside to commemorate the invention of a tool that forever changed how we view the world, we introduce two new DSLR cameras to the Canon family,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A. “In an industry where choices are abundant, providing consumers with the photographic tools that match their developing skill levels as they continue to embrace their passion for photography is a long-standing goal of Canon and stands at the core of our research and development. The new EOS 6D Mark II and EOS Rebel SL2 DSLR cameras are the result of Canon’s dedication to providing a wide range of camera choices for photographers of all skill levels, whether it’s someone taking their first picture or video with a DSLR camera or those looking to make the jump to a Full-Frame sensor camera.”

“After just one day in Yellowstone National Park with the EOS 6D Mark II DSLR Camera, it was clear that the camera is greatly improved over its predecessor,” said acclaimed nature photographer and Canon Explorer of Light Adam Jones. “ Landscape and nature photographers will be very happy. The new and improved autofocus is way ahead of the previous generation and performed extremely well, even in very low-light situations.”

EOS 6D Mark II DSLR Camera

Designed with enthusiast photographers in mind, Canon’s popular and versatile EOS 6D DSLR camera historically served to bridge the gap between Canon’s higher-end APS-C DLSRs and Full-Frame DSLR cameras. The EOS 6D Mark II DSLR camera features several enhancements over its predecessor model, and its benefits include:

  • 26.2 Megapixel Full-frame CMOS Sensor
  • Optical Viewfinder with a 45-point All Cross-type AF System1
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF with Phase-detection & Full HD 60p
  • DIGIC 7 Image Processor, ISO 100-40000
  • Vari-angle Touch Screen, 3.0-inch LCD
  • Built-in Wi-Fi®2, NFC3, Bluetooth®4 and GPS technology
  • High-speed Continuous Shooting at up to 6.5 fps
  • Dust- & Water-resistant

EOS Rebel SL2 DSLR Camera

Stepping up from a smartphone or point-and-shoot camera for photography can be intimidating. With the introduction of the new EOS Rebel SL2, a powerful, small, and lightweight DSLR camera, Canon hopes to alleviate some of those concerns for first-time DSLR users.

This small yet powerful camera features the world’s fastest AF speed* at 0.03 seconds, allowing for quick focusing on subjects in the frame. When designing the new EOS Rebel SL2 camera, Canon took into consideration feedback from entry-level photographers who expressed interest in learning how to go beyond a camera’s program mode. The result was the creation of a convenient new user interface called Feature Assistant. With the EOS Rebel SL2 camera, users will be able to see on the camera’s Vari-angle Touch Screen how switching modes on the mode dial or tweaking camera settings like aperture and exposure compensation can alter the image they are about to capture, thus guiding photographers on their way to capturing more compelling images, such as ones with a shallow depth-of-field or being able to give moving subjects a frozen or flowing look.

The EOS Rebel SL2 DSLR camera features several other enhancements over its predecessor model, the EOS Rebel SL1, including:

  • 24.2 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) Sensor
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • 3.0-inch Vari-Angle LCD Touch-Screen
  • Built-in Wi-Fi®2, NFC3 and Bluetooth®4 Technology
  • Full HD 60p & External Microphone Input
  • DIGIC 7 Image Processor, ISO 100-25600
  • Optical Viewfinder with a 9-point AF System

Original Press Release by Nikon on 12th April 2017:

THE NEW NIKON D7500: SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE THAT DRIVES THE DESIRE TO CREATE

Exceptional Speed, Precision and Low-Light Ability Has Never Been as Attainable; The New D7500 Uses the Same Powerful Imaging Sensor and Includes Many Features from Nikon’s DX-Format D500 Flagship

MELVILLE, NY (April 12, 2017 at 12:01 A.M. EDT) — Enthusiasts are a distinct type of photographer, who go to great lengths in the relentless pursuit of the perfect capture. It is for this user that Nikon Inc. announced the D7500 today, an advanced-level DX-format DSLR that provides a robust yet lightweight camera with powerful performance and premium features. Using the same 20.9-megapixel image sensor, processor and wide ISO range as the D500, Nikon’s flagship DX-format DSLR, the D7500 incorporates an exceptional combination of stunning image quality, impressive speed, astounding low-light ability and 4K UHD video capture, yet remains within reach for a diverse array of image makers and creators.

“The Nikon D7500 was engineered to be as versatile as the photographer using it, and excels whether shooting fast-action sports, stunning low-light landscapes, distant wildlife, glamorous portraits or multimedia content,” said Kosuke Kawaura, Director of Marketing and Planning, Nikon Inc. “This is a camera for the photographers who are serious about their passion, infatuated with the next frame and above all else, want speed, small size and an excellent value.”

Balance Image Quality and Low-Light Performance
The new D7500 features Nikon’s latest 20.9-megapixel DX-format imaging sensor and EXPEED 5 processing engine, the same high-performance heart of the Nikon D500. Designed to excel in a wide array of shooting conditions, the D7500 eliminates the optical low-pass filter (OLPF) for maximum sharpness and clarity, with the class-leading dynamic range flexibility that is a hallmark of Nikon DSLRs. The compact DX-format form factor also gives photographers extended focal length reach that is an advantage for sports and wildlife photography, especially when coupled with the vast selection of available NIKKOR lenses.

Whether shooting a landscape at dawn or sports under indoor lights, the D7500 affords the latitude of low-light capability to consistently nail the shot, time and time again. Even in the most challenging light, users can capture images with minimal noise, thanks to a native ISO range that spans from 100-51,200, and an expanded ISO range up to an astonishing 1.64 million equivalent. Those same stellar image quality and low noise virtues also apply to those shooting video, whether it’s a 4K UHD production or a mesmerizing astro time-lapse of the night sky.

Focus with Precision, Capture with Confidence
The Nikon D7500 DSLR gives photographers many new premium features and advanced Nikon technologies to help create incredible images and video:

  • The D7500 is fast enough to keep pace with the quickest athletes or animals; capable of shooting at up to 8 frames-per-second (fps) with full AF/AE, with an expanded buffer of up to 50 RAW/NEF (14-bit lossless compressed) or 100 JPEG images.
  • Nikon’s proven 51-point AF system covers a large portion of the frame. A Group-Area AF function has been added, which is a preferred focus mode for those shooting fast action.
  • The slim, tilting 3.2” 922K-dot touchscreen LCD can be used to easily control, compose and play back, even while mounted to a tripod. The menus can also be easily navigated using the touchscreen function.
  • Like the Nikon D5 and D500, the 180K RGB Metering system is used with the Advanced Scene Recognition System to help ensure balanced exposures and fantastic color rendition in nearly any shooting situation.
  • Lightweight DX form factor allows for an agile, comfortable body with deep grip and comprehensive weather sealing. The monocoque body is durable and approximately 5% lighter than the D7200 and 16% lighter than the D500.
  • Shoot all day and well into the night with up to approximately 950 shots per charge (CIPA standard).
  • Like the D500 and D5, the Auto AF Fine Tune feature when in Live View allows users to automatically calibrate autofocus with specific lenses if needed.
  • Through the Retouch menu, users can access an in-camera Batch Process RAW Converter that can handle multiple images to optimize workflow.
  • The camera’s pop-up flash can act as a Commander for remote Speedlights, while the camera is also optimized to function with line-of-sight using SB-500, SB-700 and SB-5000. It can even support the radio frequency control system of the SB-5000 when using the optional WR-R10 accessory.
  • New Auto Picture Control function analyzes the picture scene and automatically generates a tone curve within the camera.
  • Images can automatically be downloaded to a compatible smartphone, and the camera can also be triggered remotely using Built-in Bluetooth1 and Wi-Fi2

Multimedia Capabilities for Creators
The Nikon D7500 adds in a diverse array of advanced features for multimedia content creators, including 4K UHD (3840 × 2160/30p) video capture and the ability to produce awe-inspiring 4K UHD time-lapse movies in-camera. Video files can be stored as either MOV files or as MP4 files, for greater flexibility and easier playback on a wide range of devices. Like the D500, the D7500 offers 3-axis built-in e-VR image stabilization when shooting 1080p Full HD video, and can be easily focused using the rear touchscreen function.

For the advanced videographer, the D7500 offers simultaneous 4K UHD output to card and uncompressed via HDMI, as well as a headphone and microphone jack for pro-level audio recording and monitoring. To allow for smooth exposure adjustments, the camera also supports power aperture for smooth and step-less depth-of-field transitions while users can also keep highlights in-check using visible zebra stripes in live-view mode.

Tamron Introduces Ultra Telephoto Zoom 18-400mm

INTRODUCING THE WORLD’S FIRST ULTRA-TELEPHOTO ALL-IN-ONE ZOOM LENS WITH AN EXTENDED RANGE THAT COVERS 18-400MM

Dramatic extended range achieved by combining cutting-edge optical design and other new breakthrough technologies including a redesigned cam structure

18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD (Model B028)

June 23, 2017, Commack, NY – Tamron, a leading manufacturer of optics for diverse applications, announces the launch of the new 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD (Model B028), the world’s first ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom lens for APS-C DSLR cameras, which covers a focal length range of 18-400mm. Since the 1992 launch of its AF28-200mm F/3.8-5.6 Aspherical (Model 71D), Tamron has dominated the all-in-one zoom category and has produced many lenses that cover wide-angle to telephoto zoom ranges. Tamron has now developed an ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom that extends to 400mm (35mm equivalent of 620mm) and a 22.2x zoom ratio. Packed in a light, compact body (4.8in./24.9oz.)2 is Tamron’s accumulated knowledge and experience for all-in-one zoom lenses, including the most advanced optical and mechanical designs, an HLD (High/Low torque modulated Drive) for the AF system and the Vibration Compensation system. Photographers can now enjoy wide-angle to ultra-telephoto photography using one lens, which is ideal for travel photography and eliminates the need to carry extra lenses. The new Model B028 lens enables photographing a wide variety of ultra-telephoto images including everyday casual scenes. The 18-400mm will be available in the U.S. at the end of July at US$649 (Around RM2730).

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

  1. The world’s first3 ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom lens to achieve 400mm telephoto

The new Model B028 is the world’s first lens for APS-C DSLR cameras that covers a focal length range of 18-400mm and achieves a zoom ratio of 22.2x. The focal length of 400mm on the telephoto end enables the capturing of ultra-telephoto pictures with the 35mm equivalent of 620mm angle of view. Now, with just this one lens, a photographer can readily enjoy the power of ultra-telephoto to bring distant subjects closer as well as the perspective-flattening effects that only extreme telephoto settings can achieve. This all-in-one zoom lens is ideal for travel and everyday shooting. It allows a photographer to switch from wide-angle to ultra-telephoto without changing lenses, making it faster and easier to capture a much wider range of subjects including travel scenes, wildlife, action sports, landscapes, cityscapes, portraits and food.

  1. Excellent image quality across the entire zoom range, from wide-angle to ultra-telephoto and macro

The optical construction of the B028 consists of 16 lens elements in 11 groups. The use of specialized glass elements such as LD (Low Dispersion) and aspherical lens elements effectively minimizes wide-ranging aberrations, including chromatic aberrations and distortion, thereby assuring outstanding image quality. Optimum power distribution among the individual lens element groups achieves both the optical performance and the compact size necessary for an ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom lens that boasts 400mm focal length. Also, it enables tele-macro photography with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9.

  1. Lightweight and compact design exhibits Tamron’s basic philosophy for all-in-one zoom lenses

Despite being an all-in-one zoom lens that achieves 400mm ultra-telephoto, Model B028 is light and compact with a total length of 4.8in. and a weight of 24.9oz.4 A new lens barrel design utilizing three-step extensions was developed to enable the necessary elongation to produce a 22.2x zoom ratio. Compared to the conventional approach, the division into a larger number of cams ensures comfortable operation and stability while zooming. Tamron’s philosophy for all-in-one zoom lenses is to allow each photographer to casually capture everyday photos with a lens of a practical size, and Model B028 fulfills this philosophy.

  1. HLD motor provides high-precision AF and enables compact lens construction

The AF drive system for Model B028 uses Tamron’s exclusive HLD (High/Low torque modulated Drive) motor. The power-saving HLD motor produces outstanding driving torque, and adjusts motor rotation from low to high speed to enable accurate and quiet focusing. The HLD motor takes up less space thanks to its small size and circular arc shape that allows the size of the lens to be reduced.

  1. Equipped with the Vibration Compensation system necessary for ultra-telephotography at 400mm

Despite its compact size, Model B028 is equipped with Tamron’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) system, which effectively curbs camera shake under low light conditions (such as a dimly lit room or at dusk) and while taking ultra-telephoto pictures. This greatly expands opportunities for casual handheld shooting. The jitter-free stability of the viewfinder image allows for easier framing and enables the photographer to compose the subject quickly and comfortably.

  1. Electromagnetic diaphragm system now used also for Nikon-mount lenses

The electromagnetic diaphragm system, which has been a standard feature for Canon-mount lenses, is now employed in Nikon-mount lenses5. More precise diaphragm and aperture control is possible because the diaphragm blades are driven and controlled by a motor through electronic pulse signals.

  1. User-friendly features for everyday comfortable use

With an eye toward active outdoor photography, Model B028 features Moisture-Resistant Construction to ensure worry-free shooting as well as confidence while shooting under adverse weather conditions. Also, the Zoom Lock mechanism prevents undesired movement of the lens barrel under its own weight when the camera is angled downward while walking.

  1. Compatible with TAP-in ConsoleTM, an optional accessory product

The optional TAP-in Console provides a USB connection to a personal computer, enabling the user to easily update the lens’s firmware as well as to customize features, including fine adjustments to the AF and VC.

  1. External design placing importance on functionality and ease of use

While inheriting the design that makes use of many organic curves and the delicately polished form down to fine details that characterize the SP lens series, the new Model B028 comes with a highly sophisticated design that also places a lot of importance on the lens’s functionality and ease of use, featuring an overall form that faithfully encompasses the internal structures within, a slim Luminous Gold brand ring and the switch shape design.

Three New Nikon Lenses and Updated Waterproof Coolpix W300 Camera

Nikon’s latest announcement, unveiling the AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.4E ED, AF-P DX NIKKOR 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR, and AF-S Fisheye NIKKOR 8-15mm f/3.5-4.5E ED lenses. To make sure you are ready to capture your summer adventures, Nikon has announced an updated tough camera, the COOLPIX W300 point-and-shoot, which sports improved durability and the ability to record 4K video.

Extremely specialized and extremely interesting, Nikon’s latest fisheye, the 8-15mm, offers users the ability to adjust focal length quickly to match certain compositions, as well as deliver both 180° circular images at 8mm or full-frame coverage when zoomed in. It also uses ED glass to minimize chromatic aberrations and reduce color fringing, and it has a Nano Crystal Coat to combat flare and ghosting. On top of this, it has the latest E-type electromagnetic diaphragm for added exposure consistency during continuous shooting.

AF-S Fisheye NIKKOR 8-15mm f/3.5-4.5E ED lenses, AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.4E ED, and AF-P DX NIKKOR 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR

Next on the list is a high-end fast prime, the 28mm f/1.4. With a versatile and widely appreciated focal length for looking for a fast and wide-but-not-too-wide option for street and general-purpose shooting, this lens will provide outstanding quality and performance. It features ED glass for keeping aberrations controlled, especially when working wide open, and a Nano Crystal Coat for minimal flare and ghosting. Additionally, it sports an E-type diaphragm, for fast, consistent performance.

The last lens announced today will appeal to DX-format shooters who want a compact and wide-angle zoom, the 10-20mm. This lens will provide a 15-30mm equivalent zoom range, matching a common option for full-frame cameras, and it even has Vibration Reduction to help capture sharp images in low light, with longer shutter speeds or during video capture. A variable f/4.5-5.6 helps keep the lens small and lightweight while a pulse stepping motor system provides smooth, silent focusing for stills and video.

COOLPIX W300

Today isn’t just for lenses, however, because Nikon has just lifted the covers on the COOLPIX W300 Digital Camera, a tough point-and-shoot that now shoots 4K video. With waterproofing to 100′ and improved shock-proofing of up to 8′, this pocketable camera will be an excellent companion on all of your expeditions. The camera also features a 5x optical zoom lens for wide-angle to telephoto perspectives for capturing vast landscapes and getting sharp close-ups. A major improvement is the addition of 4K recording for extremely high-res video. And, as with most of Nikon’s latest camera announcements, this camera is equipped with a built-in GPS as well as Snapbridge via the implementation of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

Comparing the Nikon D5 with Sony A9, in Real World?

A Youtube camera gear reviewer, Max Yuryev, and pro sports photographer Paul Nelson, team up to give Nikon D5 and Sony A9 an outdoor and indoor review.

They called this a REAL WORLD Comparison which I do not agree. No, I won’t call this a real world comparison, as obviously the subjects (runner, boxer, etc.) are all staged and instructed by the photographers to do what they want.

Both were impressed by the Sony A9, for its wider AF point coverage and faster frame per second shooting speed.

Both cameras are able to give fast and accurate focus on moving subject, with Sony A9 outperformed the Nikon even more.

My Opinion though…https://www.photomalaysia.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=196&action=edit

Comparing a Nikon D5 camera that is over 17 months old with a just announced (still under pre-order stage in Malaysia) Sony A9 camera isn’t fair at all. A faster processor, bigger buffer, and better sensor could have been developed and used in any 17 months newer camera.

One thing I do agree though in the review, that the focus points in Nikon DSLR is quite limited to the centre portion of the camera. At times I do want my subject to be slightly closer to the edge, but couldn’t as there is no focusing point there.

However, comparing 20fps in Sony A9 to 12fps in Nikon D5 for me is meaningless. Having more files in your memory cards mean you have to spent much more time having to go through each photo and more space to store those crappy photos. How about a 1000fps Sony RX100 V? That would be the king of all sports camera?!

Define real world. Eg. Olympic. Where’s Sony? The next Olympic? We will wait and see…

OK, it is still an interesting video to watch, and it just makes me wanted to get my hand on a Nikon D5 more now (am using Nikon D4 still). Yes, you can say that I am a biased Nikon user.

Does Gear Matters? Pro Photographers with Amateur Gear VS an Amateur with Pro Gear

Does gear matters? Or is it the person behind the camera?

The photographers at Mango Street made an interesting video having two photographers with different gears (beginner set vs professional set) shooting the same model.

The two professional photographers each used a discontinued = RM2k Canon Rebel T3i (EOS 600D) and low-end lenses (a kit 18-55mm and a 40mm f/2.8 pancake lens), and they invited their friend who isn’t a photographer (but who possesses a basic understanding of photography) to shoot the same model at the same location using a high-end RM13k Canon 5D Mark IV with a RM8k Canon 35mm f/1.4L II lens.

Below are some of the photos taken by them:

Daniel (Pro with Amateur Gear)

Rachel (Pro with Amateur Gear)

Justin (Amateur with Pro Gear)

My thought…

Which sets of photographs you think is the best? We can’t judge sharpness and resolutions from the photos shown in Youtube, but composition wise, Daniel and Rachel definitely show some more interesting shots here. From the video, it can be seen that the Pro Photographers are able to direct the model more confidently, into the position / angle that they wanted.

Sony A9 Firmware Update V1.01 – addressing overheating issue

Sony has just released a new firmware update v1.01 addressing the overheating issue of their latest professional A9 camera that goes upto 20fps shooting speed.

Photographer Danny Eusebio, known as that1cameraguy online, posted the 9.5-minute video above about a recent experience he had with the camera. After taking the a9 to a pool for a swim meet, Eusebio noticed that the overheating warning icon showed up on the screen after less than 20 minutes of use in 81°F.

Sony A9 is still in pre-order stage in Malaysia. Not hitting any physical stores yet. If you are getting one or already in the pre-order list, do have the new firmware ready in your computer and update the firmware when you have the camera in hand.
